Food Dreams After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I can't be the only one who had this experience. In the recovery room and during my 2 day stay in the hospital EVERY time I drifted off to sleep I would have images of food in my head. It was so weird. I have never had anything like that before and since I left the hospital it hasn't happened. I wasn't hungry at all and was even nauseas so I am guessing it has something to do with my stomach hormones? Or maybe my body was saying farewell to food. :) anyone else?

I'm not post op yet, but I can definitely understand that happening. A big part of the process is letting go of your former relationship with food. Before surgery and after we are being bombarded with dealing with the emotional fallout that comes with that, and on top of the trauma of surgery... It can be overwhelming.

I'm sure I have many such dreams ahead of me.

It felt almost supernatural. While I was recovering I was like "how can I be having these bizarre vivid food images in my head"?

Oh my!! I definitely had them!!! Though I would wake up depressed, thinking I actually messed up my diet! I've had pizza dreams and soda ..... Thank goodness it was just a dream

Good thing about these dreams is that when I was having them, I knew what I was doing was bad..... So this tells me that even when I'm unconscious, I feel bad about eating unhealthy food! Yay!

I have nightmares about drinking carbonated beverages that stretch my sleeve. That is always on my mind!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
