Junk Food Advertising or The Bane of My Existence

Recommended Posts

Last night I watched a commercial sporting a good looking guy having a pretty intense love affair with a bag of Classic Lays Potato chips.< /p>

At first I thought it had to be a Lifetime movie, given the romantic music overlay, as they lovingly ran (or in the chips case, teetered) across an open field of wild flowers towards each other.

Then it went a step further, delving into the "history" of how they met. Apparently, while riding the bus one day, the lonely man happened upon her "Lays" photo on an online dating site. He immediately swiped her photo to the "matched" side, as the attraction between them was nothing less than magical. Seriously it brought a tear to my eye.

From there it was a stylish montage of picnics and parties, being joined at the hip, and kissy faces.

Ah, young love.

But then came the fateful day when they were strolling along the avenue, hand in bag, and they happened upon a window display of other Lays potato chips, but, and here's the dramatic plot twist, they were in a variety of flavors hitherto unexplored: Barbecue, Ranch, Sun Dried, just to name a few.

And the man, being the two timing dog that he was, uttered the iconic: "We have to talk" line to Classic's demoralized facade. Yep, she was being traded in for a newer model, without so much as a fare thee well. I swear, I think I saw her packaging fade from sunny to mustard yellow right in front of my eyes. It was quite traumatizing.

So, being that these type of ridiculous advertising gimmicks abound in our day and age, hoping to keep us hooked on the bad stuff. What are your opinions of the worst junk food commercial? And how do you help deal with their tantalizing allure? ????

Oh, btw, my personal caption for that commercial is: There are always new ways to get "Layed."

Thanks @@Djmohr

I normally do too except when I'm watching On Demand or Hulu. They won't let you fast forward through the commercials. Sneaky buggers! ????

I feel like the sucker that they are targeting in the commercials. I try to DVR almost everything so that I can avoid these evil commercials. Why can't anyone make exercise and healthy eating look sexy! I wouldn't be surprised if these commercials involve some sort of deranged hypnotherapy! Anyways, I am done with my rant and am glad that you decided to make a post about this topic.

P.S.: I am looking up this commercial :D

I also get sick of those food commercials. No wonder this country is JUMBO size . Between the food commercials and the sexy commercials we can't get a break.

I hate commercials and avoid them whenever possible. The one that irks me is where an extremely beautiful young model eats this huge burger that's way too big for her mouth. It's shot like a porn film (or how I think they are filmed). There is no way that skinny model eats those burgers on the regular! I think it's supposed to be funny, but it doesn't hit me that way.

I think advertising is unfortunately very good at what they do.... pizza. Doorbells...dog barks... Gooey Hamburgers...baby crying...all kinds of distractions!!

(Calgon take me away)

It is almost food porn isn't it?

And nothing to counterbalance the junk...like above poster mentioned.

I try to DVR most shows...I'm also very big on the mute button...

Feel sorry for innocent young ones that are getting drilled w/ unhealthy

Garbage ... Sigh... Ok I'll stop my tirade now thank you

You are absolutely right @@Julie norton

It's all about subliminal conditioning. We couldn't be more programmed to salivate in anticipation of the next junk food feast than if we were Pavlov's dog!

They're negative conditioning for me. I find them so disgusting (including that 4X too-big burger the young women try to fit their mouths around -- not because it's phallic, but because it's so blatantly stupid).

The food is just too huge to fit in my stomach anymore, and it gives me the same negative physical reaction I get when I've had a bite or two over the limit.

Ugh!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
