Do you need help at home post-op?

Recommended Posts

Once I come home from the hospital will I need help doing things. My wife is trying to figure out if she needs to take time off from work beyond just the hospital time. Will I need help getting up from the bed, from a sitting position, do I need to be escorted on any walking exercise down the block I may do? Is there another reason to have someone there and if so for how long?

Any of your experiences would be helpful. Thanks.

I had a RNY gastric bypass about 26 months ago. I was in the hospital for 2 days and then returned home. While I was in the hospital, I was up and about every 2 hours walking. I needed someone to drive me home but once home I didn't need any help getting around. So in general, I think the answer is no.

But I did not use any pain medicine after I left the recovery room. If you are on pain medicine, it might affect your balance. Also some people in the hospital found it very difficult to get up and walk. So I guess it depends on the person and your particular medical conditions.

I was in the hospital for three nights. By the time I got home I was doing things on my own though I did have someone staying with me to help out. It was nice to have someone just in case. I was only on Tylenol. I wouldn't say you have to have someone but if she can stay with you just the first full day at home it would probably make you both feel more at ease.

red37 Thank you!! I appreciate you guys taking the time to respond. Unless I hear from someone else saying differently I will let her know she is not absolutely needed but it would be nice the first couple of days if she could be there.

I took three weeks off work. My husband was home with me for the first week (I was on my own for weeks 2 and 3).

It was great having him around to do things like take care of the pets and bring me things (my abs were pretty sore the first few days), but I probably could have managed on my own if I had to.

I was in the hospital for a week, but I still needed help once I got home. I had my sister with me for 3 days after I got home. It was a lifesaver for me.

Wow carolm1965 why were you there a week? Complications? We are planning on getting a hotel for my wife for 4 nights just in case. My surgery is scheduled for a Tuesday and that would be a Saturday checkout for her. I am hoping to check out Wednesday or Thursday but I know things can happen.

I didn't need any help either. My doctor does not prescribe pain meds either, so I wasn't "out-of-it". I was able to sleep in my own bed, walk on the treadmill and get drinks and food from the kitchen. Good luck and check in with us so we can share your success!!

I spent one night in hospital. Both my husband and I did the surgery together. We only needed help because we cannot bend so well. But you should be fine on your own.

My husband took 2 weeks off after my surgery expecting the worst, but I was fine after a couple of days. I could have managed on my own from day one, but we have 2 small kids and a small farm so it was a huge help.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
