suedot55 35 Posted July 21, 2015 How long did it take to get off the metformin? I had RNY on 6/25/15. I was hoping to at least be on reduced dose by now. Maybe I'm just being impatient?
VDB 800 Posted July 21, 2015 I was taken off it the day after surgery, also four other diabetes meds. I now have as needed insulin (Lantus) in small doses as needed, average 20 mg a day. Type 2 diabetes, so much better!
Daisee68 2,493 Posted July 21, 2015 Hmm. They also took me off before I left the hospital. Where r your sugars running - with the med?

VDB 800 Posted July 21, 2015 i aim for under 140 in the morning, less throughout the day....
Daisee68 2,493 Posted July 21, 2015 Mine is generally 104 morning fasting post surgery without med. Ur reading is good (better than mine was with med). I am sure they will start tapering it down soon. Keep track of it and be sure to call Dr if u have sugar lows.
Sharon1964 2,530 Posted July 21, 2015 I called my surgeon's office to ask about stopping metformin after the surgery. The nurse I spoke to said we wouldn't know until we did a blood sugar level in the hospital. I don't take metformin for high blood sugar (my numbers have always been normal). I take metformin because my A1C is too high. So blood sugar levels aren't going to tell us anything. Is there anyone else in this situation?
Daisee68 2,493 Posted July 21, 2015 @@Sharon1964 - A1C is an average over the past 2 to 3 months of your blood sugar levels so while the numbers you may have seen say fasting or after a meal seem "normal", your A1C wouldn't be high if your blood sugar levels were not high at some points during the day (say immediately following a meal). SuzeMuze 338 Posted July 21, 2015 Everyone's different. ( as is the case with nearly everything dealing with RNY- opinions are experiences here) I stopped taking Metformin & all other meds I was on the night before surgery 9 months ago & haven't taken a pill (other than the Vitamins now) since then. My A1C went from being nearly 13 when I was diagnosed with Type 2, to about a 9 with all the meds....to a 4.5 at my six month post check up.
ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted July 21, 2015 hoping on reduced dose @@suedot55 my doc took me off my diabetes meds when i came home from the hospital call your doc - ask him to run another A1C hopefully the #s will have improved maybe he will lower your dosage (or take you off completely ) fingers and toes crossed that your meds will be reduced/disappear sooner than later 41 lbs gone!!! keep up the good work good luck kathy congrats
ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted July 21, 2015 A1C nearly 13 to 9 with all the meds....to a 4.5 at my six month post check up . @@SuzeMuze eeeeeek 13 - that's a high # i've never seen before that's wonderful being at 4.5 now!!! you are now as "normal" as i am sorry about that 85 lbs down so close to goal, you can probably taste it keep up the good work for the rest of your healthier, happier, longer life kathy congrats
SuzeMuze 338 Posted July 21, 2015 @@proudgrammy I know, right? I was practically peeing Pixy Sticks! I can't believe with the other issues (that were ultimately caused by the diabetes) that no one ever thought to do a check for it sooner! Hey, I'll take "normal as you"- you're one of the happiest people I've seen...I'll take it as a compliment! Yeah, I'm pretty close to my goal, but it's slowing way down, and that's ok. I've also come to grips with the fact that I'm a human being, and I deserve to relax a bit. I'd been pretty militant about what I ate until a couple of months ago...when it hit me that it won't hurt to enjoy food every now and then. Is it "Cheating"? Nope.. cause I chose to eat those no-sugar-added fake chocolate covered raisins. And ya know what? It may take me a while to lose these last 8 pounds...but I'm a happier person and I'm not gaining any weight!
SkinnyDown 409 Posted July 21, 2015 I was on two oral diabetes meds, and two types of insulin before surgery. I spent a week in the hospital, due to complications, but I was off all diabetes meds and insulin by the time I went home. My A1c is now 6.1 It was 9.2 before surgery. Djmohr 6,965 Posted July 21, 2015 @@suedot55 I took my last dose the night before surgery. I would bet at your next appointment they will pull it. If they don't mention it, I would. Nice job by the way!
samelton68 64 Posted July 21, 2015 I left the hospital still on diabetic medications but soon after getting home they were eliminated. Now at almost 1 1/2 years out I am worried about my sugar and my morning readings have been in the 120's
