Bypass or sleeve...will the answer come to me?

Recommended Posts

i am booked for Aug 26 for Bipass. The doctors at my hospital dont give you a choice it's bypass or sleeve if they find complications when they get in there.

I am soooo scared. I am very healthy other than being overweight. Worried i am gonna trade one problem for another. I am trying to focus on the after, but it's so hard not to worry.

Marie Car I am not as close to surgery as you but I share your feelings exactly. I am so scared but I know I need to do this. I focus on the good everyone says but I feel like in petrefied. Gastric bypass seems so serious I don't know how I got like this. I feel like no one gets how afraid I really am. It's a lonely place to be I'm healthy as well but I do not want to wait till I'm not. We can be here for each other. Surgery sistas.hang in there :)

I'm in the 26th too!!

Being nervous s do scared is completely natural. But you have to remember that there is a reason you're a candidate for the surgery. Additionally, what's to say that you won't have more health complications without the surgery? Life is precious and none of us want bad things to happen, but we also have to remember that they are part of life. We "adapt and overcome". I'm sure throughout your life you've met some real obstacles and you are still here, a beautiful and strong person!

I have a ton of ailments that, should there be a problem, could be very dangerous, but...the life after surgery is going to be more rewarding and happy that it makes up for those fears. Rest assured our doctors are prepared for anything and will be ready to help you and get you thru it. Plus, you've got all of us here to lean on for support!

Here's to August 26th!

I'd find a new doctor. This is a huge decision, one that I wanted to make for myself. Now, that said, I did tell my doctor that if he went in and had no choice but to do a bypass over sleeve, to do it, but that was MY decision. I did not leave it in his hands unless it was unavoidable.

My name is Sam. I'm 30 yrs old. I recently have become sick and tired of being sick and tired. I'm fat. I don't care to sugar coat it. That's how I got this way. Pun intended. I will tell you I'm scared of surgery. I will also tell you I've done many things I've been scared of. I am so on the fence about bypass and sleeve. Originally I thought I wanted to lap band. That turned out to be very wrong. So my surgeon is really pro patient choice with in reason. And I am stuck... so I'm really curious how did you make your decision? What's your experience?

Howdy.

I felt (and feel) the same way.

I went into this thinking that a sleeve was what I wanted.

Sleeve seemed less obtrusive....full run of piping afterwards.....would be able to absorb all the nutrition that I needed from foods....etc....etc. I was really pretty much decided.

Went to the first seminar.....and then to another session where prospective patients could talk to folks who've had WLS and hear their input.

I also spoke with the program nurse......who is 2 years out from her sleeve. She said she wished she'd done bypass and gave me a number of reasons....many of which I share the same thoughts about.

I changed my opinion firmly. Bypass is the procedure I want.

First.....I do have reflux on occasion. Normally I don't have symptoms.....but when I do it sucks outright. I've been warned that it's magnified hugely with the sleeve.

The bypass is reversible in the future.....if ever needed for some reason. I'm not going into this with this thought.....but it's nice to know.

My sister has lived the last 15 years post-bypass with excellent results. She avoided diabetes, lost her significant weight and has absolutely kept it off this entire time.

There are benefits either way.

@@Dub when are you scheduled?

No date yet....the surgeon's group will be submitting all my documentation to the insurance company for approval in the second week of December. It's going to be a tight window to hope for a 2015 date.

To the OP lipstick lady had the sleeve not the gastric bypass. I have the sleeve and am scheduling myself for the GB. The sleeve is great for restriction but you CAN eat anything, there is no malabsorption. I too wish I just had the GB in the first place maybe I would have been able to maintain my goal weight and not be struggling to stay there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
