Proteins, carbs and calories, oh my!

Recommended Posts

I had my 10 day post op with my surgeon and nut on Friday. I have lost 12 pounds since my surgery, with a total loss of 30 with what I loss from the pre-op liquid diet. For the first ten days after surgery, I was lucky to get in 300-400 calories a day. I would hit my Protein goals of 60grams and hit Water goals.

My doctor says he does a tighter sleeve than many other docs. And he wants me to get my calorie count up into the 1000-1200 range before I can start working out in the gym so I don't have serious caloric deficits.

My nut laid out a few ways that I could add calories to my shakes, which I tried over the weekend, and was able to bring my calories up to the 700-800 range. But that meant that now my carbs are up at 70-80, which is where my Proteins are too. They both told me not to mind the carbs, just get the calories. I will try this, but I have scoured the boards and don't see where anyone else has done something like that. Kinda scares me.

It's only been three days but my weight has fluctuated up. I will talk with my nut again, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar situation of higher carbs in the liquid and puréed stages, and did it work?

That's what I'm planning to do.

I guess I was just looking for dialogue about what other's post ops looked like and were any like mine. This forum is pretty much the only place I have to "talk" about the process, and I had seen that people said the boards really helped them with the journey.

My carbs are almost always high. As long as my Protein stays within the 85 - 100 range, and my carbs aren't "white" or refined carbs, I don't worry about it. My calories are often in the 800 -1000 calorie range.

Thanks, that helps to know. I'll not worry about it.You look like you have done really well, so I'll just keep my eye on the Protein and water!

Scour some more.

I never limited my carbs. My carbs pretty much matched my Protein grams during my weight losing phases.

LOL! I will. You also look like you have done great! I guess I was finding too many "I only eat 40 carb" posts!

Me too! In fact, I called my surgeon's office in tears a couple weeks post op because so many posts on here were so anti-carb, and it had me freaking out and questioning everything my dietician told me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
