Has anyone gone in for RNY and ended up with the Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I saw the surgeon and he said if he can't do the RNY due to scar tissue he would have to do the sleeve. I was wondering how many people this happens too. I don't have a surgery date yet. I have finished all my test. They will schedule an appointment and the surgery when they get the results. Looking like the end of August first of September.

I'm still pre op so can't answer your question from experience. But I do know it was there in the paperwork I signed, about agreeing to the possibility of having to switch procedures once they get in there, along with the possibility of having to remove my gallbladder (which I kind of hope they do - one stop shopping and all ????)

If it happened, for me anyway, as far as the procedure switch, I think I'd be fine with it. But there would definitely be a period of mental adjustment once I woke up.

Excellent question!

I had my gallbladder removed plus I had hysterectomy. The gallbladder was laparoscopic but the hysterectomy had to be open.

my first surgery I went in for bypass and ended up with a band due to adhesions and scar tissue. I am now going in for a revision and my surgeon is going to try again to give me the bypass but I also signed papers for a sleeve. I have surgery on the 31st

Giving the authorization for both the sleeve and the bypass just gives the doctor the ability to make an onsite clinical decision. Most likely you will get the surgery you and the surgeon have planned on, however, if there is a lot of scar tissue, the surgeon can do the sleeve which is simpler and has fewer complications. This is a good thing as the doctor can't wake you up during surgery to have a conference :)

Good Luck.

Do they tell the same thing to every patient? Or at least ones who have had other surgeries. I wonder how hard they try to do the RNY over the other one.

I wish you luck on your surgery. Funny how you had to many adhesions and scar tissue before now they are trying to do it again. Unless they are doing an open surgery. Although times are changing they do lots of WLS surgeries. Good luck again. I am hoping for surgery the end of August.

If you have a surgeon who has done a lot of these surgeries than chances are he or she will do their best to give you the surgery that was planned. That being said, I would much prefer my surgeon to make the safest choice at that point in time. Fortunately the sleeve also has good weight loss results so that won't be too bad if you end up with that. Since I was already having the sleeve, my consent also included the possibility of an open procedure. My surgeon assured me that he had never had to do an open sleeve but just in case there was something unforeseen the consent was in place. Fortunately all went well.

I had my gallbladder out too and my surgeon told me that they would actually use my old scars as a road map and that it made things easier. As for the hysterectomy, I don't think that will really cause too much issue, as long as there aren't too many adhesions. They only need to be able to make it to top part of the small bowel, so if they gave you a lower transverse cut like with a csection when they did it, it'll probably not be an issue at all.

That makes me happy! I really want the RNY. With diabetes and high blood pressure. I also love sugar, but I gave it up in January when I found out I had diabetes.

Every now and again my fat molecules have been known to run amok without my permission. Signing onto Twitter, posting on Facebook. Pretty sure they might have even been responsible for the last stock market crash. ????

Thank God I'm getting WLS!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
