brandeett 52 Posted July 19, 2015 Hello. I am going on day 7 of my liquid diet. I am having horrible hunger pains. I am allowed 2 Protein Bars per day for Snacks. I don't understand why something like a small amount of fat free cottage cheese wouldn't be permitted since it has Protein, I don't understand what the difference is. I'm having a hard time with this. :-(
_Kate_ 2,224 Posted July 19, 2015 Have you asked your NUT? Everyone seems to be told different things, depending on where they are and who's doing the op. Hope you feel better soon Kate
ShrinkingPeach 1,291 Posted July 19, 2015 Definitely talk to your nutritionist. The pre-op diet is to shrink your liver making it safer to retract it during surgery so they can get to the stomach. There are different plans based on how much they need your liver to shrink. Make sure you are getting your Fluid intake high as that helps, but also ask what can you have? Good luck! RickM 1,752 Posted July 19, 2015 It's something for your doc or RD to answer - I have never found a good explanation for an extensive liquid diet pre-op (other than the day before to clear out the GI system.) Doing a low carb diet for a couple weeks to improve the liver condition makes some sense for those surgeons who need that extra help (though such a short time provides only a marginal benefit at best,) but liquid only doesn't seem to make a lot of sense, particularly given how long some docs have their patients on liquids post op, too. If they are allowing Protein bars along with the liquids.....gotta ask the doc, or his staff, on that one.
