Getting sleeved in 9 days, worried

Recommended Posts

Hello. I am very scared. I don't like anesthesia, and I'm afraid of not being able to breathe well when I wake up. I also have frequent nausea, and I'm scared that this will enhance it. Also worried about how much pain I will be in. Any advice would be appreciated

I can only agree with you, I have the same fears. Surgery 8/3, and I just keep telling myself I have no choice this time, this has to be done if I am ever going to have a chance at being healthy and feeling pain free/knees, back. My first surgery was having my gallbladder removed, and I just keep telling myself, just like that was necessary so is this. I am trying to treat it not as an elective procedure, and in some ways it is not, if you know what I mean. So heres' to all of us who are waiting to have it done, may we all be successful and healthy. Good luck.

Hi u will be ok tell them when u have the pre admission testing they will ask u if u have any questions or concerns tell them about past experience with anesthesia or nausea thrust me the Drs and nurses absolutely do not want u throwing up so u don't bust stitches etc it will delay your healing they will give u all the anti nausea meds u ask for I promise it's a standard order for post op they don't want u to not drink fluids and if your nauseas or throwing up u won't drink that's opposite of what they want

11 days for me and I'm super nervous now. I was excited before and it just got real. Can someone suggest the best food/water tracking app?

I am 10 weeks post-op now and remember those fears quite well. While you are in the hospital you will have access to some very good medications that will control the pain and nausea. I think the worst thing of the whole process was the leak test as the X-ray room was very cold and the marker to check for leaks tastes horrible. There was some pain at the large incision site, but by day 6 I was walking 2 miles a day (I walked before surgery as well) and the pain had mostly resolved itself.

Breathing was not an issue at all. I could not tell they had intubated me...no sore throat or anything. The waiting for the surgery was probably more miserable that the surgery/recovery itself!

In 10 short weeks I have gotten off my blood pressure medication, dropped 6 inches off my waist and lost 50 lbs. The sleeve is retraining my mind on what a portion of food is supposed to be.

Have you discussed your concerns with your medical team. You typically don't meet the anesthesiologist until pre-admission testing but when you do make your fear known. Make sure your surgical team is aware of your issues with nausea so they can have something at the ready for you post op.

Try to think positive. I had a prior experience with desaturation coming out of anesthesia, but had no issues at all with my sleeve surgery. Also please know that not everyone has issues with nausea post op. I had a super smooth surgical process. No pain, nausea, or issues with anesthesia. My surgery went smoothly and I was able to walk in recovery. Trust your surgeon. This is really an easy procedure.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
