Recommendations: protein supplement , etc

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I am scheduled for bypass August 24th. Just wondering what you guys found was the best Protein supplements and drinks out there. Also my dietition recommended whole milk or 2% not fat free. Does that go for the yogurt too? Also they aren't having me do the liquid pre-op diet to shrink my liver and with liver disease/NASH I am puzzled why not since it is enlarged. Taking my gall bladder since I have stones and repairing my hiatal hernia.

Thanks for any advice!

Kathryn

I know that when I had surgery they wanted me to drink 2% milk, because of the lactic acid in it. I have NASH too, and I had a 10 day pre-op liquid diet. All surgeons are different. You weigh over 100 lbs less than I did, when I had surgery, that might be the reason.

I'm looking for a good unflavored Protein powder for myself right now. So I'm interested in hearing what others suggest. I am so picky now with tastes and textures of everything. Things I used to LOVE, I hate now, and I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. lol

Good luck with everything, and welcome!

I prefer the premiere shakes. They are by far done of the best tasting. The have like 30g of Protein per shake.

Premier is my favorite, except the chocolate which I literally can't choke down. The Unjury was okay, but premier is better. I have some unflavored Protein Powder from GENEPRO that's highly recommended here, haven't tried that yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
