sallymann 8 Posted July 18, 2015 Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum and am so glad I found y'all online and in the App Store. Reading through the posts encourages me and answers some of the questions I have. I'll be having RNY on September 2nd. My biggest fear is code bluing in the OR, and I know that's silly. I've got to get that thought out of my head? I've fought my weight since my teens (I just turned 50. Good grief, that sounds so old to me, ha!). I'm 5'0 and currently weigh 251. I attended a seminar at my surgeon's office and then had a consultation with me. He thinks the RNY is the best option for me. My pre-op date is scheduled for August 28 and immediately following I will start a 3 day liver shrinking diet until Sept. 2, the day of the procedure. I keep seeing where lots of y'all are doing a much longer pre-op liquid only diet. Should I consider doing the liquid diet longer? Would it be more beneficial to do it for 7-10 days prior? Thanks so much! I need all the support I can get! Blessings, Sally
Dub 9,922 Posted July 18, 2015 Howdy ! You summed up some of the exact same stuff I was feeling. I figure that I'll be in better physical shape at the time of the bypass surgery than I was in on my last three surgeries....hernia repairs and an ankle repair. Each of these found me at a higher weight. I say that to say this.....don't worry unduly about the surgery. They will take very good care of us.....especially good care because of the nature of our conditions. They are experts at conducting surgery on folks with high BMI. Experts, I tell ya. I'm sure I'm going to get a good long liquid diet due to my overall weight being so high...not just my BMI. His surgical instruments can only lift organs of a certain weight. He was honest about that upfront and has me really motivated to stay on track with the new calorie restrictions now and burn off what I can leading up to the surgery. You are only half my weight. You'll do great in the OR.
SkinnyDown 409 Posted July 18, 2015 I think many people's pre-op diet right before surgery, is dependent on how much you weigh. I was on a liquid only diet for 10 days before my surgery. I was 322 lbs the day of surgery. It went by fast, was not an issue for me at all. I doubled up a lot on the Protein shakes, that made me feel very full, and the warm broth was comforting. I think some people have a month of liquids before surgery, and others have little or no pre-op liquid diets, or a mixture of liquids and food. It is all very dependent on the surgeon you have. I actually had some serious complications during my surgery, but I still survived. I spent a week in the hospital after my surgery, but I am doing very well now, 2 months post-op. Pinkpeonies1 87 Posted July 20, 2015 My current weight is 228 and I was told 2 week of semi liquids which include 3-4 Protein Shakes as a Meal Replacement and a lean cuisine for dinner. They didn't mention Jello or popsicles but I'm sure any sugar free should be fine.
