Whats more important? Hydration or Protein?

Recommended Posts

I'm having a really hard time getting in both my Protein and my 64 oz of Fluid. And before anyone says drink your protein so you get both I can't. The thought of Protein drinks makes me gag at this point. If I'm eating protein I'm not drinking and if I'm drinking I'm so full I can eat! Help! And how much protein do I really need??

according to my Doctor and Nutritionist they are both very important. I have tried just about every brand/flavor/combination of Protein Shake and found that there are some I can do and I found an online site that has recipes to try as well.

the other thing is putting unflavored Protein Powder in everything you eat and you can also put in into your liquids so that you get everything you need.

my requirements are a minimum of 60 grams of Protein and 64 oz of liquids each day... I have found that if I meet both of them I lose weight regularly and if I don't I stop losing all together!

good luck!

@@sparksrn, I am in the same exact boat! I am about six week post-op and have never met both goals in one day. So, I don't have the answer but I look at it like this - if I don't stay hydrated I will end up back in the hospital and if I don't get in my Protein the worst that could happen is my hair will fall out :-) Of course I don't want either but I certainly don't want to be back in the hospital.

my surgeon's office says hydration is more important. The head surgeon feels that most patients have enough reserves to go without Protein for several weeks. I found this out when I had kidney stones and between the pain from the stones and then surgery to remove them, I just couldn't tolerate any type of solid food. My NP told me to focus on fluids and worry about protein later. Typically, I'm getting in 60 grams protein and 80 ounces of liquids, the minimums required by my program.

@Spiceyfrog I agree hydration is more important but at what point do we say I'm out of danger on the hydration area and should try for more Protein? After 6 glasses or the full 8? Lack of Protein in the diet initially causes fatigue, irritability and lethargy. If inadequate intake continues, loss of muscle mass, generalized swelling, decreased immunity, weakened cardiovascular and respiratory system and eventually death can occur. Other potential symptoms include diarrhea, changes in skin pigment, development of dermatitis or a rash and changes in hair texture, thickness and color.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
