Novice in the kitchen

Recommended Posts

Well, my mom got me a Tapas recipe book. Tiny servings of awesome food. It's not a bad idea. I'm pretty on top of things in the kitchen (or was before) but now find myself having to rethink cooking as there winds up being an insane amount of food if I follow a normal recipe. I'm only slightly further out than you are but it is a process and I'm throwing away more than I eat some days and a doggy bag lasts almost a week.

thanks Rose. What got me thinking about this was salsas. Sounds crazy right? But on every FB page the first thing I usually see in a recipe section is some amazing salsa to help the food go down. It made me realize I don't even know how to make that! Lol. Well I can follow directions so I guess I just need to roll up my sleeves once the time comes. Meal prepping is also something foreign to me. But I'm researching and getting knowledgable about how planning is key.

Well - salsa, aside from requiring a lot of chopping, is pretty easy all in all. I totally get the difficulty though. I need to go buy tiny storage cups or something because my stuff sits in the freezer at this point and I've been living off of Protein drinks. My nutritionist told me I need to eat more calories. Hahaha! No one has ever said that to me before, it was awesome. And hopefully if I manage to do so I'll have more energy and wont be such a blob at the end of the day anymore.

I run a daycare durning the day. I fix lunch for them and by the time I am done cooking I am not even hungry!! I have to make myself eat something, so I normally eat a cheese stick and I am done. Then at night when I fix supper for my hubby and whatever kids are home (3 teenagers, two with jobs) I forget to fix sides to go with the meat!! Last night I chopped up onions and a green pepper and put in a pan with some stew meat. I cooked that and my hubby came in and asked, what are we having with this? I said I don't know, I opened the fridge and said there is some fresh pineapple you can have. I felt bad for him. I forget about everyone else because I knew I would eat maybe a few bites and be full. It is hard to cook for my family of 5 since I only eat a few bites. I am stuck and as to what to do for dinners!!! I love the cockpot and use it a lot. But left overs could last ME a week. I might just start making them cook for their self, as I could make left overs from one one last me the rest of the week!!

This site isn't bad in terms of recipes as well: theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com. I think for myself however what is going to be key is basically small baking dishes such as this: http://www.amazon.com/HIC-6-Ounce-Ceramic-Souffle-Dish/dp/B006ITA2RI/ref=pd_bxgy_79_img_y

With something like that I can prep a casserole type dish (soft, with sauce etc) measure it out into the tiny dishes and freeze all but one or two. And maybe Pyrex like bowls with lids for slow cooker recipes so that it can then be frozen. I will be able to manage this far better if I'm not cooking every day. I simply don't have the energy right now.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
