Food for unplanned air travel at one month out

Recommended Posts

Okay, so my dad is in the hospital for heart failure, and I'm flying to be with him and my mom in Indiana from Philly tomorrow at 6:25am. Obviously, I have not had time to plan out how I'm going to eat on this trip. And I will probably not be at my parents' house much, mostly will be at the hospital. I am just over a month out and am still doing a lot of soft foods, not much meat so far, mostly Beans, eggs, some veggie burgers, cheese. I've already packed a bunch of Protein Powder to make shakes, but I'm not checking a bag, so I can't take much else from home.

Does anyone have any ideas for easy, quick, portable stuff that I can eat on this trip?

I like the P3 Protein Packs that are near the lunchables in the store. They're usually $1.25 or so, and they have cheese, deli meats, and nuts. They're just about the right size to be filling. :) Sargento has one that's cheese, nuts, and cranberries too.

Otherwise, can you do Protein Bars yet? Grab some Protein Bars and stick them in your purse?

Once you are there, you will probably be able to get Greek yogurt, maybe hummus in the cafeteria. Maybe cottage cheese on the salad bar. You could try tuna in the pouch.

Have a safe trip, and I hope your dad is doing well. I'm sure that your family will be so glad to have you there.

Get some of those yogurt things in squeeze tubes. Just check the labels, they are aimed at kids so they may have a lot of sugar. However they freeze great so they can help keep your other food cold and you can eat them when they thaw. Also get nut butter in the tube packs. I know Target sells single servings of Justin's almond butter like this. get some oatmeal packets as well. You may want to open them and grind them finer and then seal them in zip locks, but this way you can get hot Water and a paper cup and mixed them.

If you have access to a car, why not just go to the grocery store when you're there and stock up on the things you eat at home?

The flight from Philadelphia to Indiana can't be that long. You can take Protein shakes with you on the plane -- they're food. I go through TSA / security with 'em all the time.

Thanks for the suggestions-- it gives me some ideas.

@Menelly--I may try some of those, though I can't do nuts yet. I'm still full on 1/4 cup of food, so I'm sure the cheese and meat would be plenty. I don't think I'm supposed to do Protein bars yet, either.

@missheidi47-- Thanks for mentioning the cafeteria. I kinda forgot about that!

@BLERDgirl--I'll check out the yogurt things. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to have nut butters yet. I'm going to call my surgeon's office when I land tomorrow, so I'll ask (have to anyway, since I am probably not going to be back for my follow-up appointment on Tuesday.)

@VSGAnn2014--Things are just so up in the air with my dad at this point, I don't know when or how much I'll be able to get away from the hospital. And it's about 45 minutes from my parents' house, so I won't be able to just run home and scramble some eggs. As for the Protein shakes, I'm not allowed to do Premier or other ready-to-drink ones. I have baggies with my Protein Powder, and I'm planning to just buy a little bottle of milk when I get thru security to mix one. It wouldn't be a long flight, but at such late notice, I couldn't get a direct flight and have to change planes in Atlanta.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
