TxCoon 9 Posted July 15, 2015 Has anyone had their gallbladder removed during weight loss surgery?
ssflbelle 829 Posted July 16, 2015 I too would be interested in knowing this question. I also would like to know if surgery for a calcified gallbladder and hernia could wait for 6 months as I have to have a supervised 6 month diet and would hate to think I would be those 2 surgeries before the WLS in 2016. cammi38_42 4 Posted July 16, 2015 I currently live in Florida but had my sleeve done in Michigan April 28th 2014 and did have my gall bladder removed at the same time. It did not hamper my weight loss or recovery. I was off work for 1 week but I had a sit down job.
ssflbelle 829 Posted July 16, 2015 Cammi38_42 You had two surgeries and only took a week off, that is a quick recovery time. I also live in Florida the West Palm Beach area. Where do you live?
BrownEyedTxGirl 139 Posted July 16, 2015 Not yet...but I am scheduled for hernia repair, inverted sleeve and gallbladder removal at one time. I have been cautioned though that there is a chance the doctor will not be able to remove my gallbladder due to my liver being too large and that I may have to wait until I lose weight. Hoping we are able to get all done at once!
tcon 305 Posted July 16, 2015 Will be sleeved and gallbladder removed on July 30th. I was wondering about the down time. Thanks for asking! I still have not figured out how to start a topic ????????
TxCoon 9 Posted July 16, 2015 I was wondering too. I have my consult next Friday (July 24th) and I'm going to ask him if he could take it out. There is nothing wrong with it, but I've heard soooo many people having a lot of issues after W.L.S. My uncle had the gastric bypass and told me to be sure to ask if it could be taken out because he had to undergo another surgery to remove his after his bypass. He said if you can prevent the horrible and agonizing pain, it is sooooo worth it.
zonetracy 53 Posted July 16, 2015 I have never had a problem with my gallbladder before surgery and so far it seems to be working fine. My surgeon gives everyone with a gallbladder a daily prescription for 500mg Ursodiol to help keep their gallbladders. I have to take it for a year. Someone i work with had the lap band probably 5 years ago now and she did the same thing for a year after her surgery and she still has her gallbladder. I hope it works for me too. The gallbladder is pretty much a useless organ. If I can prevent the pain of having it go bad, I'm all for having it removed. Those who've experienced the pain said it's worse than having a kidney stone. I've had one of those and I thought I was literally dying lol.
chasingpolaris321 214 Posted July 18, 2015 I had my sleeve surgery in August 2014 and had to have my gallbladder removed in October 2014 because of gallstone attacks. Having to abdominal surgeries that close together was not fun and I was in terrible pain after the gallbladder surgery, probably because they used the same incisions to go in. That being said, my doctor told me that there's no way my gallbladder deteriorated that quickly and that I probably had the stones and sludge before my VSG. I would ask your doctor to at least check if you have an issue with your gallbladder before surgery. I wish I had!
ssflbelle 829 Posted July 23, 2015 Had my 2nd of 6 months supervised weigh loss diet. I had a CT as the Dr requested as I knew I had a hernia and possible gallbladder problems. The Dr stated I had an umbilical hernia and he would leave it alone until I have had the surgery and lost weight. Reason being is that the hernia could come back if he took it out before I was thinner. However he did say I had a porcelain gallbladder and that would come out during the WLS surgery if I was approved for it. If not the gallbladder still had to come out before it became cancerous.
