Sugar love after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone who has had the sleeve found that they had an increased desire for sweets after several years of maintaining? This was my problem with the lap band. I was always a more savory food lover but when I was at my goal weight with the band I had huge sugar/sweets cravings. As soon as my band was removed I lost interest in sweets again.

The first couple weeks I did. I was dying for something and nothing helped. I caved one night and had a chocolate covered pretzel. After that the next couple weeks was salt. I wanted crunchy salty things. I started eating wheat thins with laughing cow cheese and it was divine. I could tell though that I was getting addicted and tempted to eat too many and made my husband hide them. Now I am fine. Its weird but try to ride out the craving if you can. Or have just a little of something and then get rid of it

Not at all - in fact I have the opposite. I've tried bites of a few sweet things and yuck! I used to eat chocolate candy for lunch. Not any longer. And it makes my stomach upset.

If I get a real craving I have some of a Qwest Protein bar. The chocolate chip cookie dough or the brownie one is good for chocolate cravings.

And I bought the Qwest Protein chips. I put Laughing Cow cheese on those and salt them.

Or what's really yummy is take some cheese slices and break into 4 pieces. Put them on parchment paper, salt them and bake in a 250 degree oven for 35 minutes. You get "cheese" crackers that are delicious. I used cheddar, colby jack, baby swiss and havarti.

The more you stay away from carbs and processed sugar, the less you will crave them. That's how I deal with the cravings. If I do indulge, it takes me days to detox again and get rid of the cravings. It's just easier for me to limit or stay away completely!

I'm not a year yet but was a huge sugar junkie prior to surgery. My tastes have changed a great deal. I do not crave sugar at all and the few times I have had something sugary it did not taste that great so never felt like I needed it again. Good luck

I stayed away from sugar during the first 6 months post op. Now at nine months, I do suck on hard candy about every other day. It's usually a tootsie roll pop or a few pieces of hard candy. It's important to note here that I didn't start doing this until I hit goal. While in my weight loss phase, I was even too paranoid to suck on sugar free candy. If I find myself craving more than a few pieces, then I will abstain for a few days.

My latest sugar crave is marshmallows. I like to roast them over my oven and eat a few. If I have a whole bag of marshmallows in my cabinet, then I will do this almost every night. So, I've tried very hard not to buy a bag. In fact, while grocery shopping yesterday, I put them in my cart and back on the shelf THREE TIMES. If that's not an addiction, then I don't know what is.

I've told myself that I'll stop sugar completely if I gain any weight. Thank goodness that hasn't happened yet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
