Bypass for reflux and hernia

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I have been lurking for a few weeks. I originally went to the surgeon thinking he would say I needed a Nissan Fundiplication but I was surprised when he said with my BMI of 38 I wouldn't be a good candidate for that procedure and he recommended a gastric bypass as it has a 99% success rate for reflux.

My question is has anyone on here had a similar experience? My insurance specifically EXCLUDES all bariatric procedures. We are waiting to hear if they will cover this due to it being for reflux and hernia repair.

Hello I also had a bypass for hernia repair because a Nissan failed. However I'm 9 months out and still get heartburn but it's controlled with nexium. I received the gastric bypass at a starting weight of only 171 lbs insurance did cover it though. It's been quite a road living this lifestyle and recovering from the surgery as there were a few complications. The bypass took 10.5 hours 8 days later the bowel obstructed and 5 months later the gallbladder had to go. So it's been trying. My advice is just do a lot of research on living after surgery as it is quite different in a mental aspect. Good luck

I have a hiatal hernia and godawful reflux. They told me I would benefit also. I am so looking forward to lying down and not feeling like I am drowning. I am going from a band to bypass.

I just now was approved by insurance, that has to be done first before any further, so 8/31/15 is my first scheduled appt of many I'm sure. However, 3 yrs ago I did have a Nissan Fundoplication done, due to hiatal hernia and severe GERD, ended up with Barrett's esophagus. I still have the Nissan, and realize they may have to take it down to do the bypass which is fine with me, due to at my last EGD with my GI specialist it showed I still get reflux, so that didn't even stop it, but the extra weight is pulling on it and makes it uncomfortable, I so cannot wait for this weight to be gone, I will do everything necessary, no doubts there. So it seems the bypass is preferred over the sleeve if you have reflux, saw that on a youtube video....how many of you were advised for the same reason?

I have seen a bunch of people on these boards mentioning about problems with reflux with the sleeve. Many of them end up having a revision to RNY because of it. If you already have reflux, my understanding is that the sleeve is not recommended, since it is likely to make it worse.

By the way, congratulations on your approval and beginning the process.

I was originally thinking of the sleeve but I have horrible acid reflux and am second guessing my decision. I am currently on a 6 month insurance required medically supervised diet so I have time to talk to my surgeon about it.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
