Don't know what this pain was but has anyone had

Recommended Posts

pain BELOW their sternum???? I was awakened last night in a panic attack!! My stomach, below my sternum, was in terrible pain. Enough pain that it felt to me like my band had come undone and was stabbing my other internal organs and causing them to leak. I went to the bathroom and sat down and got that feeling like when you are going to throw up...all light headed and dizzy and started sweating profusely!! I was soooo scared. The pain was unbearable...I grabbed my phone to call 911 and then I woke up hubby. I had some suppositories that the doctor had given me in case I ever felt nausea so I wouldn't throw up. I went to the cupboard and got them and put one in. My stomach was in so much pain.... It felt like someone was stabbing me!!! I tried walking around with hands in the air...my whole stomach was hard as a rock...well, not the whole stomach just where the pain was....I did eventually get some relief with laying with my head down and butt up in the air....passed some very bad gas and then all of a sudden it was gone!!!:faint::faint::faint::faint::faint: WTH???? Has anyone experienced this kind of thing. I don't have ANY idea what it was other than some bad gas, but come on....STABBING STOMACH PAINS...I wanted to rip my stomach open and rip the band out so it would quit hurting. I don't have a fill... any ideas???? Thanks, Deanna

Deanna, how long have you been banded. Your band is in that general area. It is probably swelling and gas. You may want to share this with your surgeon.

I have been banded since April 19th of this year. I have not had pain like this in that area before!!!! Thanks for your advice. I had just seen him on the 25th of this month too!!! How come it seems things happen AFTER the fact!! I thought that is probably where the band was somewhere in there....dang...hope it was a twisted bowel or something good like that!!! LOL...Deanna

I had this exact pain yesterday and was woken up by it a week or so ago. Yesterday, I thought I was dying it was so bad. I phoned my fill doctor and he said to come right in. Of course by the time I got there the pain was completely gone, but he said it sounded like gallbladder so is sending me for an ultrasound. The only way I could describe it was it was like really bad indigestion right below the sternum, but I couldn't get relief with tums. Anyway, he said it wasn't my band and proceeded to give me a 1.5cc fill (my first, I am only 5 weeks out). So, if he's not worried then I'm not worried - I think it's the not knowing that is so scarry. Hope it doesn't happen again - to you or me!

Tagger...wow...I was sleeping so I don't think it was my gallbladder. I thought I was having problems with my gallbladder a while ago, but the RN said if it is not associated with food, then it is probably not the gallbladder...I am just glad it finally went away..for you and ME....I was going to go to the ER but I just KNEW as soon as I got in there it would go away....I hate that!!! Good luck to you!! Deanna

Hey Ladies.

Is the pain on either side or in the middles. I have had pain under my port area about 2 inches down so I know it is not the port.

Just wondering.

I even jumped up and down, saw this on MASH. They say if it makes it worse it could be appendix, but no.

Areelady, did you ever figure out what this pain was? I was woken up with it again at 6:30 this morning. It lasted about an hour - no gas, just pain below the sternum. Severe, crying pain! My doc sent me for an ultrasound for gallbladder a couple of weeks ago but it was clean. I go back to him tomorrow so will see what he thinks.

Aren't you glad that a little farting took care of it? Can you imagine calling 911 and farting all the way to the hospital just to find relief? :girl_hug:

I disagree with your nurse. Gallbladder can happen anytime. While it is USUALLY symptomatic after food, that's not 100%.

Keep in mind, we used to be able to burp from the big stomach, now the band acts like a one way valve and once gas forms in your stomach you have to fart it out. Might want to watch gassy foods and fat filled foods for a bit and mention to your doc what happened. Gallbladder is not out of the picture as long as you have one.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
