Quest bars and dumping

Recommended Posts

I found that Quest bars make me nauseous and light headed. I tried 2 different one's on two different days to make sure it wasn't a fluke. From reading the ingredients I thought they would be OK, but they weren't for me. Anyway, does anyone else know of some other Protein Bars that are good with different ingredients from Quest?

Hi, I was wondering when you had your surgery. According to your profile, you have only lost 19 pounds so far. But then again it might not have been something that you updated recently. The reason why I ask, is that Protein bars only become an option around 2 or 3 months post-op. In the beginning one needs to be on Protein Shakes only.

I had surgery May 29th. I am down 34lbs as of last Friday. My nutritionist was the one that told me to try Quest bars. I've been on soft foods since week 3 after my surgery. I just can't have granola type bars or nuts yet when it comes to Protein bars. I wouldn't try anything without approval first. And no I never update profile. I don't know how to do it from phone app

I could be wrong.....but I believe the Quest bars use nuts as a component.

There are so many flavors of them that I really hope that I can always find a flavor I like when I"m post-op.

They are about the best tasting Protein bars I've tried. Hopefully you can get some good suggestions from your nutritionist.

They are good tasting. I bought a variety. I tried two on two different days, neither sat well. I travel a lot so was looking for high Protein portable foods. Can't take the Protein Drinks through airport security only checked baggage.

@@robinsmj it may be the erythritol (a sugar alcohol) in the Quest bar that is making you nauseous. I don't have a problem with erythritol but I tried something with maltitol (another sugar alcohol) and it made me nauseous and gave me a seriously upset stomach. Perhaps try a bar without sugar alcohols and see if that makes a difference?

I actually didn't try them until 6 months out and can only do a 1/2 bar at a time.

I don't think I started eating them until about 4 1/2 months out but that was just because I was having trouble getting enough Protein.

How much of a Quest bar are you eating? I used them all the time prior to surgery, and I still have a few boxes left, but haven't tried them yet post-op. Even now, at a little over 3 months post-op, I would probably only eat maybe half of one at most. Not just because that's all I'd be able to eat, but because I'd want to make sure it wasn't going to cause any problems.

I ate only half of the brownie and half of the lemon on two separate days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
