Kindle 8,667 Posted July 16, 2015 My surgeon said I should get down to 230. With 30 lbs to go It looks like I won't reach that by 12 months (Aug 25th). I wish he hadn't given me a goal because I feel like a failure... despite losing 100ish lbs.Thank you for making my point about the dangers of doctors setting goals and deadlines for their patients. You are NOT a failure and shame on your surgeon for setting you up to feel this way. Forget about goals and numbers. If you FEEL better and you are HEALTHIER, then you are a success. Those are the REAL goals of any WLS. Just keep making healthy choices and being active. WLS is about the rest of your life, not just the first 12 months. snowkitten 371 Posted July 16, 2015 @@TexasGirl86 I wish I had some wisdom for you not to feel that way but being caught in the trap myself I got nada lol. I wish u beat of luck. @@Kindle exactly!!! I honestly wish he had kept his mouth shut. I never asked for a specific weight, he gave it himself. Your absolutly right. I hate that the Dr's make it seem like all the weight loss will only happen in the first year. I'm too stubborn to stop just because a year has gone by. It may take me 3 years but ill get to where I want to be. Not what a statistic says I should be
shancanssleevejourney 74 Posted July 16, 2015 My Surgeon also did not set me a personal goal. I set one myself that is higher than the Avg. but that is on me. I was told on Average the sleeve is about 60% of excess weight. So I believe your goal should be anything at that or above. If you get past it, then you are higher than avg. My personal goal foremost is to completely get my co-morbidities gone! I can't wait to get to 6 months and hoping to report they are gone!
Bndtoslv 292 Posted July 16, 2015 My surgeon said I'd lose about 70lbs overall probably within 2 years. I have about 100 to lose. He said this when I asked and didn't offer this or set it as an expectation.
rp1980 116 Posted July 17, 2015 My surgeon didn't give me numbers either, but I was able to find out what the general expectation/average is. But the NUT and surgeon both emphasized that weight loss is personal and it's more important to follow the plan and I will be successful. 30% of excess weight lost by three months 50% of excess weight by six months 70% of excess weight by one year
VSGAnn2014 12,992 Posted July 17, 2015 My surgeon didn't set ANY specific goals for me. He asked me what MY goals were. And he just said, "You'll do great!" For the record, at 6 months post-op, I had lost 53.6 pounds since my VSG surgery. And I'd lost 73.2 pounds from my highest weight (thanks to the 11 pounds I lost on a 2+ month diet I put myself on pre-op and the 8 pounds I lost on my surgeon's 2-week pre-op diet). My weight loss goal was 150 pounds (I'm 5'5" tall and 69 years old). I've lost an additional 5-6 pounds in the 2.5 months since I reached goal, and I'm pretty much done losing. You can do all the % math if you wish.
jane13 2,256 Posted July 17, 2015 @@snowkitten I think you have done excellent and do not look at your journey as a failure. I am only 10 weeks post and I had my first f/u visit with the surgeon and I felt like I wasn't losing enough, for him. I was down 20lbs from my last weigh-in (at his other office) that was done about 2 weeks before surgery. He told me to try to only eat two meals right now and if I was hungry in between to drink Water first and if I still felt hungry after making sure it wasn't head hunger to eat fruit. I ask if I could have veggies instead and he said either was fine. I joined the Labor day challenge here because my next visit with him (at the same office, with the same scale) is Sept 8th. I hope to be close to 200. I am ok with losing 60+ pounds since April by Sept 8th! I will be 4 months 2 days post at that point. ANY LOSS is reason to celebrate! Smye 694 Posted July 17, 2015 Mine estimated that after 6 months I'd have lost the amount I ended up losing in 3 months. It's so individual and it really does depend on how closely you follow your plan as well as the body you're brining into this process
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted July 18, 2015 I didn't ask and I really don't care. I have a lot of weight to lose and am in this for the long haul. I, and my surgical team, are happy with my progress so far which is all I focus on. That, and meeting my daily goals of Protein, Water, and exercise. My surgeon said I should get down to 230. With 30 lbs to go It looks like I won't reach that by 12 months (Aug 25th). I wish he hadn't given me a goal because I feel like a failure... despite losing 100ish lbs. Mine didn't give me any specific percentages or goal numbers. I'm glad because to me it's as dangerous as living by the scale. Those numbers become ALL you focus on instead of embracing a new lifestyle of healthy eating and exercise. The closest I got to a number was really general information at the pre-appointment seminar where they informed us that sleevers lose 50 - 60% of their weight. I wasn't locked into a time frame or a goal number.
