No appetite 3 weeks post sleeve

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery June 22, and have( had no complications.I have lost 11 lbs since then. My concern is that I have absolutely no appetite and sometimes forget to eat ( and drink) ...I have to force myself to keep up with Protein intake and Water this last week!! I feel so full after only a few bites/ sips. Although I am so happy that I am never hungry anymore, I also am a bit worried if this lack of appetite is normal.I have been using Protein Shakes twice a day (as meal relacements) so I know I'm getting at least 40 grams of protein - fluids are much easier to take than small amounts of soft food. I find eating is a bit of a chore now!!! Anyone else experiencing the same things?? ( When I eat-1/4 cup of SOFT food, I eat slowly but I still feel like I have to force myself to eat, .I do like sugar free Jello, and that's about the only "solid" food that goes down easily)

I'm having similar issues with not being hungry and I will be 4 weeks out Wednesday (this week).

My main concern is not getting the proper nutrition to heal properly and/or causing long term problems. I've made it a point to try and get more Protein (close to 60 a day, but not always) and take my Vitamins.

I'm doing better on Water. I just started soft foods this weekend and have managed to have one meal each day that qualifies. Regardless, I'm consuming less than 500 calories a day and I'm not sure how that is sustainable. I have an appointment this Friday with the nutritionist that I saw before my surgery -- I'm hoping for some effective strategies to improve my nutrition or for her to confirm that my current path is ok.

What a problem we have, huh? :-)

When they took 85% of your stomach, you lost the part of your body that produces ghrelin (the hunger and thirst hormone). If you're waiting to feel hungry or thirsty to eat and drink, you'll wait forever.

For the next few months you'll need to eat and drink what you're supposed to eat and drink whether you "feel like it" or not.

That's the deal for those who are newly sleeved.

Over time, your body will figure out how to produce more ghrelin and your appetite / thirst will partially return.

But for now, enjoy the hell out of it. And still eat and drink your daily requirements.

Congratulations!! You have hit the WLS lottery!! Not everyone wins the jackpot of no hunger and having to remind themselves to eat/drink (I used the timer on my phone personally), but it's a sensation that I absolutely loved/love.

All the times I'd lost weight before, I used appetite suppressants. I only stopped because my brain tumor medications forced me to (seizures and all that jazz). As long as I wasn't starving all the time, I would easily maintain a healthy balanced diet. The sleeve surgery has given me a natural appetite suppressant and I thrilled.

Rejoice in this time!! Use it to your benefit. Drink often, eat little. When you do eat, make it Protein packed and skip the carbs. Maximize this time!

Sorry to hear that. Nonetheless, it looks like you're losing weight quite well. Congrats about that.

My surgery was June 18 and we're in much the same boat. My concern at the moment is getting enough liquid, because I had a dehydration scare several days back. It's tricky to get the eating and drinking balanced, especially when you're not feeling "hungry." I'm supposed to get 70g protein per day, but have been barely managing 63g the past few days. I think I'll just do one more Protein shake per day, which should help with both protein and liquid.< /p>

I had my surgery June 25 and am in the same boat. Getting 70 g of Protein a day by drinking 2 Protein Shakes (60g) right there. The protein shakes go down easy, but food is another thing altogether. I can eat about two oz of cottage cheese/yogurt/lentils etc. and typically need to walk after I eat to help it settle because I get nauseated. If I eat too fast of more solid foods (ie egg, fish) I vomit. I'm getting just over 500 calories per day, and just managing to get 60 oz of Water in total. Glad to know I'm not the only one having issues!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
