Surgery August 18, 2015

Recommended Posts

I am new here and I have been working towards a gastric bypass since last October when I found out my insurance will cover it. I went to every meeting and lost weight and kept it off since May. I am now scheduled for surgery on August 18, 2015. I found out today that my insurance apporved the surgery. I really wasn't expecting it to go through so quickly. It literaly took about a week and a half to get the aproval once the surgeon's office submitted it to my insurance.

I feel like it just got real. I have been telling myself that it probably won't happen as soon as I wanted it to and that I would have to appeal a denial. Not that I can think of a valid reason for a denial but you know how insurance companies are.

I am 5'6" tall and I weigh just under 280 pounds. I am not even near my highest weight of 320 8 years ago. I am type 2 diabetic, I have high blood pressure, extremely mild sleep apnea. The lung doctor said I didn't even need a CPAP machine it is so mild. I have anxiety and depression.

I know that surgery is not a quick fix and that I still have to do the work. I also know that plenty of people have had this surgery and it didn't work for them because they didn't work the program. I am nervous that I will be one of them. I have an extreme sweet tooth. I eat sweets like it is going out of style. I don't feel guilty when I do it either. I have been told that after surgery my tastes will change, but I am worried that I won't be able to give up the sweets. I know they can cause dumping syndrome, but since I have never had that yet I am not sure how much of a deteriant it will be. I hear it is quite bad and I am hoping that if I ever have it, it will help train my mind to associate sweets with sick feelings.

I really want to make this surgery work for me because I am only 40 years old and I want to be healthy and to not have diabetes anymore. Any tips for the sweet lover? Also I will be picking up a blending system next week any recomendations for a newb?

Hi Naomi,

I am scheduled for August 18th as well. I was originally schedules for June 14th for dumb young endocrinologist wanted some tests and it took 1 month to get the results. Those tests had already been done last year by my regular endocrinologist and all was fine. So I was not happy.

Now, everything is fine and I am on for August 18.

It IS getting scary now.....I have been waiting since last June for appointment and to be put on the list. I live in Canada, our health insurance plan in Québec pays for it.

I am 63 years old, Type 2 diabetic with an insulin pump getting more and more resistant to the insulin. I have asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver and went through Thyroid cancer this past Winter! Oh, I also have extremely severe sleep apnea and have to sleep with CPap with I absolutely HATE.

I am 5'7'' and weigh between 215, now at 204 with thyroid meds.

I also have a crazy sweet tooth!!! That will be the most difficult thing to get away from although I am much better than I used to be. I have been married for 38 years and my love is 6'l'' and weighs 160 on his heavy day, that is with jeans on! He will probably lose when I stop baking.

I am planning to go to Florida, leaving here Sept 22, 5 weeks after surgery and stay at the beach for the month of October. We have a trailer, we will take our time driving down.

Lets keep in touch, we could help ea other through this.

Renée-Louise

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
