Details of fills please

Recommended Posts

I just had a fill this morning. You lay down and puff out your stomach. They insert the needle and first take out all the liquid to check it then they add it back in plus a little more. After that you drink Water to make sure the fill is not too tight. And then its a liquid diet for 2 days. Thats how my doctor does it.

My doc does pretty much the same thing as what Ariel said. I lay down, cross my arms over my chest and do a partial "crunch". He presses on my abdomen to find the port, numbs the skin and then does the fill. I don't think he pulls out all the Fluid at every visit, he usually tells me when he does; I think it's like every other fill, but anyway, you sit up, drink some Water to make sure it goes through with no problems and if everything is good, out the door you go. Fluids for 24-hours and then mushies for 24-hours, and then back to solids.

If they should overfill you, you'll know when you drink the Water and they'll take some Fluid out right then. I only had that once and it was instant releif when they unfilled me a bit. Still was numb and didn't feel a thing.

By the time you get filled (4 or 6 weeks out) you should be fine doing the "crunch" if that's what your doc does.

My doctor also has me lie down during a fill. Afterwards, I go to Radiology and they have me drink a solution and watch it go down under floroscope.

It's interesting to hear that some of the above posters actually have Fluid removed and reinjected with additional liquid. I don't like to watch the needle, so I'm not sure if my doctor does that, but I'm going to ask.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
