How did you get off BP meds?

Recommended Posts

So I was on blood pressure meds for years prior to my bypass on 4/28, even took it day of surgery as per doc's instructions. I don't take it immediately after surgery and my blood pressure was running a little high at my first two post op visits. So I went back on the bp meds and have been on them since. And of course, my pressure is normal with them.

I'm down 50#s now; so if you're taking bp meds, how would you ever know if your bp has normalized due to your weight loss?

In my case, I monitored my blood pressure daily. When my BP dropped, I cut my BP medicine dose in half. Then when it dropped some more, I went off the BP medicine completely. This all occurred within the first couple weeks after surgery.

I generally took my blood pressure readings first thing when I got up in the morning so I would have some consistency with the readings. Without daily readings it would be hard to make that decision. I suspect your BP readings might have been slightly elevated in the doctor's office.

Thanks, that makes sense. I do have a BP monitor...i guess I'll buy some batteries for it today and start tracking. I have cut my dose though. (The higher dose was prescribed as a mix up initially, so I just went back to the lower dose).

I'm sure my bp was elevated at those first post op appointments, my body was probably angry over the surgery etc. Thanks

Pain will cause an increase in BP as well as the surgery in general.

Depending upon your body & if there is an underlying cardiac condition with continuous & consistent cardio exercise it should go down. I have an irregular heart rate from time to time so I have to take atenolol at a very low dose still.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
