Post-op dumping on broth?

Recommended Posts

I am 12 days post op and had to get away from work for a bit today so I went to lunch with a Vietnamese employee of mine. He took me to this upscale Vietnamese pho place and I ordered straight chicken broth. Nothing in it, no sprouts, cilantro, noodles, NOTHING. Had a small small bowl and about the time we finished and I had gotten back to work, maybe 20 minutes elapsed, I was in a sweat and panic to get to the toilet. It was terrible. Pure bowel cleansing hell! I know their broth has a little fat in it, but so does homemade Bone Broth. Was this dumping? I am kind of shocked. I have had nothing but Protein Shakes, Protein drinks ( fake crap)and Water since surgery and am not allowed to start "soft mushy foods" for another 10 days. I am a little uneasy by this reaction. Any advice, clues or pointers? Thanks...

Well I've never had dumping but as long as you're on liquids this kind of "movement" is normal, I wouldn't worry. It will take a long time for your "movements" to be anything like normal again lol

No answers, but I can tell you the exact same thing happened to me. Went to a Mexican restaurant, had the chicken Soup. It had a lot of stuff in there, but I only had about 8 tablespoons of the broth only, and it wasn't spicy. About two hours later, I had a complete blow-out (sorry for the TMI) and was thankful that I was very close to a bathroom when it hit. Frustrating! And makes me nervous about starting mushies in a couple of weeks.

Sounds like dumping to me. It may be a combo of the spices and fat in the broth. At home you are likely to go easy on them, but you can't be sure in a restaurant. FYI - While it is not uncommon to have loose BM's while on all liquids, it does not happen to everybody.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
