Approvals with BCBS Federal

Recommended Posts

Anyone had BMI of 38 and gotten approved with Federal BCBS? I am waiting to hear from them. I do have Diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, high cholesterol and osteoarthritis. All these are new this year and decided sleeve could help me be rid of some. Hope to hear from others who have bcbs fed.

I have bcbs (not federal ) and they approved me in 2 days. I think you'll get approved. I have a high bmi with no secondary illnesses.

Thanks for the encouragement. It has been 7 days but the 4th of July holiday was part of those days

I did call BCBS and confirmed they had my paperwork. They told me notes are not made until the decision is made. Also said they have 15 days to review.

No i am still waiting i called Friday last week and was told they sent. A letter to my doctor to let them know they needed more time to review. I kept positive thinking my paperwork arrived around the 4th of July weekend so they are behind. Going to call after work today. A little nervous but I have faith so I am preparing to start preop on Monday.

I also have BC/BS and a BMI of 38. My Dr. is submitting my paperwork sometime next week. I've had a history of having a BMI over 35 for about 6 years now. And I have moderate sleep apnea. I can't imagine that you will not be approved. I think I am much more borderline than you. Wishing you good thoughts and hope we both get approved!

Well just called insurance and still no answer. Looks like on 7/16 the letter send to my doctor said they would have a response within 15 days so that means until 7/31 next Friday. I am going to start my preop anyway on Monday. Hoping others have better news today.

So I received a letter from insurance approving the overnight stay in the hospital after surgery. So now only the actual surgery is pending. Hope this is a good sign.

Nice, lol thats weird why would they approve surgery stay and not the actual surgery?? Anyways thats a step forward. Glad to hear thats approved for u. I havent gotten anything yet.. Ugh.. Its making me go bonkers playing this wait game. Lol. Do u think its cause it summer and they have alot more requests in the summer than other seasons or months.. ?? Idk..

Yeah i do think summer is probably busy. Also people go on vacation and there was that 4th of July weekend they closed both Friday and Saturday. So i am hoping that is reason for delay.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
