Worried about losing enough on pre-op diet...

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to have my surgery on 7/13/15 and my surgeon requires a two week pre-op diet using New Directions products and told me I needed to lose 10 lbs over the two weeks. My insurance required a 12 week medically managed weight loss program before they would approve the surgery and I lost 25 lbs on that. I started the diet on 6/29/15 and the first week I was on 4 products a day which added up to 520 calories a day. I lost 7 lbs in that first week so when I had my weigh in on Monday 7/6 it seemed pretty clear that I would be able to lose the 10 lbs. Unfortunately the next 2 days after that I gained 1 lb. This morning I was down .8 lb but still would have 3 to go and I weigh in again tomorrow. I talked to a nurse at the doctors office and she told me I could go down to 3 products a day which I did yesterday and plan to continue until my surgery but my question is this - has anyone not quite lost the weight the surgeon wanted you to on the pre-op diet but still went ahead with the surgery? I have followed the pre-op diet to the letter and I am getting in around 90 ounces of Water a day but I am just so worried my surgery will be postponed...

I think it is quite obvious that you have made a monumental effort to lose the weight. Not only with your pre surgery program, but with the pre op diet.

The usual purpose of asking applicants to lose a specific amount of weight before surgery is twofold. One is to show that you are compliant with the program and serious about changing your lifestyle and eating habits, and the other is to shrink your liver to make the surgery itself easier.

By losing 30+ pounds you've done that and more! You should be extremely proud of yourself. I would be shocked if they would even consider for one second postponing your surgery. I can't offer any absolutes, of course, but I honestly think you have nothing to worry about. Which I know is easier said than done.

Please let us know what happens and I truly hope it all goes well!

Thank you so much, I hope the surgeon sees it that way too! I am just so excited to start this new phase of my life and I would hate to have it pushed back for even a few days... I will definitely update after my appointment tomorrow!

See! I can't tell you how many things I stressed and worried about going through the process. All for nothing. Mines just a couple weeks away and I kind of wish I could get that worry time back! ????

It's natural though and we all go through it. That's because we know how much getting this surgery will change our lives for the better.

You are going to do great when it's your turn.

I know what you mean, I've been worrying about things through the whole process but I'm feeling really good now. ☺️ Although, I'm sure there will be all new stuff to worry about afterwards, lol!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
