Dayquail b4 Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I think you should be honest and call your surgeon. If they don't want to operate, it's for a good reason. Maybe they can switch you with someone that is scheduled for next week.

As long as you're surgery is tomorrow, you can take Dayquil until midnight tonight. Your surgery should only be rescheduled if you have a significant fever or your cold has clogged up your throat. After surgery you are drugged pretty heavily when they pull your intubation tube, so you need to be able to support your own airway since not being able to breathe through your mouth while you are drugged just means you're not breathing at all. I had a whopping cold before surgery, but I could breathe just fine through my nose and mouth so I wasn't concerned about fibbing that I felt fine. If, however, I couldn't breathe well, I would have told them this. Unlike when you have a cold and you try to sleep, if your throat gets clogged up, you wake up coughing and blow your nose. When you're drugged if your airway is blocked, you just lay there and don't get any oxygen since you physically aren't able to be woken up by the fact that you can't breathe.

So...no big fever and no airway complications, lying about a cold is fine. A fever and/or airway issues, it's generally better to delay the surgery a bit than risk dying in recovery.

I took the Dayquail @ 1am & surgery was @ noon. I was to show up by 8:30am for 10am appt. Alot of coughing & stuffy nose only @ bedtime. Coughing up mucus in the day when I'm up movin. This was one of those summer colds. I had the revision done. After the surgery one week later & out of pain medication I had a small cough it kind of hurt but it wasn't that bad took DayQuil liquid.< /p>

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
