Can't stand to eat meat!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys its been a little while since Ive been on here! Just living life and adjusting to my new self. I am almost one month post op on July 10th!! Yeah I have lost nearly 30 lbs since surgery!!! Im excited to see the progress! Ok so my big delema is this I can't stand meat it grosses me out super bad to chew it up for so long in my mouth. I have had it in Soups steamed broiled baked and BBQ. I have tried chicken breast and thighs. Pork chops, pork butt, ham, beef diffrent cuts n sword fish, salmon, tuna and shrimp. The problem I have is that as I chew my protien I start to get a mental image along with what Im eating and start breaking down it down as I chew. For instance I will get a visual of the texture I see skin and layers of fat veins the blood and so on,I connect the mental image with the food in my mouth and I get so grossed out I can barely swallow without gaging!! I know there are lots of other protiens besides meat. I am just wondering if any one has had this weird thing happen also certain sents and odors I cant stand!! Any one have this issue?? Thanks in advanced for any input and feedback!!!

I'm vegetarian and allergic to seafood. Don't like meat? Don't eat it. I do eat a lot of eggs and greek yogurt, but I've done quite well not eating any meat at all.

@ BLERDgirl thank for the feedback. I would prefer to eat a total vegitarian diet but when I spoke with my surgeon he told me I can maintain a better protien based diet by aquiring most of my protien from lean meats. And that its more difficult to maintain a high protien diet on a vegan and vegitarian diet. I just never had a problem with eating meats till now.

Awe man im sorry for the "Visual" yes I do believe you are right need to talk to someone about it! But it honestly only happens with meat and I keep thinking its because I have to chew it for so long!!

To be honest I also get that visual image of the skin and veins and such. The thought of eating animal flesh grosses me out as well, but I don't mention it often since it tends to offend omni eaters. Following a vegetarian diet takes a little creativity, but it's actually not that difficult for me. This was really important for me when I initially started investigating WLS. My diet consist of plant based Proteins and dairy. A vegan diet would be more challenging so for now I am sticking with vegetarianism. I hope to transition to vegan once I achieve a normal BMI.

Maybe talk to a therapist. This sounds like something beyond simply not liking meat.

Not abnormal at all. Lots of vegan and vegetarian folks feel this way. Also shrimp and lobsters look too much like giant cockroaches to me. They are all scavengers.

I have been able to maintain my Protein levels between 75 -100gms since at least 3mths postop. Before that I was maintaining between 60 - 75grms.

So my favorite kitchen tool since being sleeved is my pair of kitchen shears. I was always a gulper, big bites, a few chews and swallow. It's been a hard habit to break.

Now, I use my handy dandy shears and cut my meat up into little bites and force myself to eat one at a time. Less chewing per bite needed and it takes me longer to eat. I feel my restriction faster, too, because I am forced to slow down.

Try it?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
