Hello, my name is William. I have just joined the bariatricpal forum. I was working on having gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago, and had been through most of the classes and was only a few months out from having my surgery when I had a heart attack, which caused me to have congestive heart failure. I thought that was the end of the road for me and would just have to live with it, or lose weight on my own. Well, I have not been able to lose any and have actually gained since the heart attack. I feel like a am being smothered by the weight, so I have been doing a lot of reading online, and have read that it may still be possible to have WLS even with my problems. I have a appointment with my cardiologist in 1 week and am going to discuss this with him. Because it was the last seminar for a while, I registered for a WLS seminar for the day after my cardiologist appointment.

Basically, while waiting for my appointments, I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience, and any information or advice I can get.

Thank you

Current weight: 390

Issues:

CHF

sleep apnea

Diabetes

High blood pressure

Gerd

I haven't had this experience so have no insight but I wanted to welcome you to BariatricPal and wish you the best of luck.

Procedures have changed even over the last five years so I encourage you to do as much research as possible. The cardiac clearance is critical but don't give up until you have had a good talk with a cardiologist.

Hi William!

Welcome to the group. I have not had heart issues and do not know what impacts that might have on your ability to get approved but it sounds like you are on the right path.

I can tell you that I had all of your other comorbitities and stage 3 kidney disease plus some additional health issues when I had bypass approved by my insurance company.

I am now free of type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, Severe Gerd and stage 3 kidney disease. All of them are in remission!

I really hope and pray that you are able to work something out with your cardiologist and a good bariatric team.

I do feel like Bypass gave me another lease on life. My Nephrologist is the one who recommended WLS for me and he told me I was headed for dialysis if I did not do something.

I will say a prayer for you!

Hi William, I have coronary artery disease I had two stents placed in my heart with a 99% blockage in one artery and 80% in another and I have similar co morbidities as you. Basically in order to get the surgery I had to get an additional clearance from my cardiologist he was very supportive of my decision. Good luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
