3 - 5 meals without grazing

Recommended Posts

When a nutritionist asks you to eat five rather than three meals a day, how do you make sure it isn't grazing? In between drinking and eating, I am using my mouth the whole day!

Make sure that they are all actual meals and that the other 2 aren't "Snacks." And also, eat them on a schedule when you're actually hungry or getting hungry, not just because they exist and you were told to eat them. Somedays (especially after a good workout) I am starving and feeling hungry many times a day. Other days (rest days usually) I'm not that hungry and normally eat maybe twice, with a string cheese or a yogurt in between to stop me from having any headaches.

You're grazing when you run to your fridge, take a bite or two of something and then go away...then return 15 minutes later to do the same thing. If you're sitting down and focused on a balanced meal, comprised mostly of Protein, and you're treating it like a meal, then it's a meal.

I eat 3 meals and in the morning about 10:30 I drink my Protein Shake, about 4 or 5 I eat half a Protein Bar (it's very filling) or I eat cut up chicken and nuts. With that being said my meals are very small. They look more like Snacks vs meals because I eat so little. I get home very late on week days so I don't eat dinner until 8.

It's been three days on this schedule now, and I am eating or drinking nonstop. To calculate five meals every three hours, 5*3=15. 15 hours of my day, I am eating every three hours. In between, I have JUST enough time to wait 30-45 minutes, twice, to drink for 90 minutes, and eat again. I'm exhausted.

It will get better. I focus on my drinking and also on my Protein. There are days I just can't get it all in. I don't stress because if I do then it makes it worse. First thing out of bed I have to take my thyroid meds. If I don't then I'm off for the rest of the day because I have to wait an hour to eat or drink. There are days that I'm so busy at work that I forget to eat in between meals. (I never thought I'd see the day that I say that) so I stick as closely to the plan as possible. I've lost 71 lbs since April. It's coming off and I feel great for the most part. I've sat down at times to eat and could only take 2 bites and then there have been times that I feel I could just eat forever. I know this is normal. So I don't think that you have to kill to yourself with feeling like you are eating. I think the Nut is just trying to help you, but you really have to figure it out what works and how to get it all in.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
