Hi guys & gals,

So, in preparation of my August surgery date, I'm trying to get everything I will need post op. I've got my Multi-Vitamin (Flintstones chewable-because who doesn't want to be a kid again  ) , my Protein for shakes, a chewable b-12, but I'm stuck on a good calcium citrate. Does anyone have any suggestions? I currently take a Gummy Calcium, but I'm told we cant take the gummy ones. Just trying to be as prepared as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

I took Citracal (calcium citrate). These are horse tablets. One of the problems that I unexpectedly encountered after surgery was that I was unable to swallow most of my Vitamins. I had to buy a pill splitter and a pill crusher. The Citracal tablets had to be crushed and the powder was very hard to take because it tasted like chalk. I landed up mixing it with Crystal light and drinking it. After a couple months my ability to swallow was restored and this no longer became a problem.

There are a variety of options on your Calcium requirements. Some I have heard are very enjoyable to take. It must be calcium citrate. So you might experiment at least until your ability to swallow is restored.

They had me take chewable viactive until I could swallow pills again. Then immediately they moved me to Citracal because it is calcium citrate and there is less of a chance of getting kidney stones from the additional Calcium you have to take.

Recently I had a spine surgery where they went through my throat. Well that has left me with an inability to swallow pills again. My bariatric team told me they now make Citrical in chewable so but I have not been able to find it so I am back on Viactive until I find them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
