Surgery after Blood Clots

Recommended Posts

I was 2 weeks from being sleeved in August 2012 when I found out I had blood clots in my leg & both lungs. I was hospitalized and had to cancel my surgery until everything was sorted out with my health. The doctors believe I had the clots because of a combo of foot surgery that left me sedentary for 12 weeks and hormonal birth control. They didn't find any blood disorders and I'm no longer on blood thinners.

I feel like nearly 3 years later I'm ready to try again for the surgery. I've developed a healthier lifestyle, I exercise and eat much better but the weight doesn't come off easily (I also have PCOS, sleep Apnea and Fibromyalgia).

The problem is that I am terrified now that something awful will happen to me! The doctors all told me if I'd even lived long enough to have my surgery I would be dead, and I can't get that out of my head.

I feel like I need to do this...but I don't know if it's a smart choice for me to opt for surgery when blood clots are a concern there.

Have any of you had a history like this and can give me some words of wisdom or advice?

I've had PEs( blood clots in the lungs) and I had surgery almost 3wks ago. My blood clots occurred back in October and I've been on Xarelto since then. Preop I went off of it for 3 days (surgeons orders and hematologist agreed) and 3 days later I was started back on the xarelto. I had no problems, I was on compression hose post op and SCD machine to keep blood flow good at hospital.

On another note, my hematologist said being overweight and me having PCOS puts me at higher risks of clots. Good luck. Hope this helped.

Thank you! That makes me feel a lot better. I feel like at 310 lbs. my health is at risk everyday and I need to weigh the results of risking the surgery and having the opportunity to get healthy or staying the way I am and nearly guaranteeing I'll develop even more long term health issues. I have to start the entire process all over again so I'm going to attend my seminar Aug 6 - 3 yrs to the day from when I had my clots!

I'm another fellow PCOS sister. Had a small blood clot to my lung and right leg (no cause found). Was on Xarelto, had it held for a week prior to and after surgery without any issues.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
