New Me 2015 94 Posted July 7, 2015 I just have to vent! I went and saw a GI Dr because I have some liver damage from all the fat that got into my liver. Thank goodness I had a liver biopsy when I had the sleeve done and found this out. So I'm meeting GI Dr for first time he sees I've lost 61 lbs since Sept last year. Tells me loosing weight is the best thing to help my liver, he's pleased with the weight loss my liver enzymes have come back to normal, things are looking better. Then he asks me how I lost so much weight. Proudly I say I had the gastric sleeve done in March this year. He looks at me frowns and grimaces and says oh well that's too bad because there is a high rate of going back to being overweight. That's a shame. I was stunned! I just sat there and really didn't hear anything else he said. He seemed to rush to get things done and that was it. The more I think of it the more mad I get. I would think he would have been a little more supportive. I'm not even 4 months post op yet!! Sorry to vent but he made me so mad!
MommyMeghan 92 Posted July 7, 2015 Even doctors can be morons, don't let it get to you. He clearly needs to do some more research.
Healthy_life2 8,324 Posted July 7, 2015 @@New Me 2015 Tell him you will gladly give your surgeon his professional opinion...lol Agreed what a moron
_Kate_ 2,224 Posted July 7, 2015 Brush it off as insensitive ignorance and remember how well you have done. Amazingly well Don't ever be sorry about venting!! Kate
CloserToFine 172 Posted July 7, 2015 Even if Dr. NoBedsideManner believed that to be true, he should never say that to a patient who's undergone the surgery. There's simply no excuse for it. He sounds like a person who's pleased with himself and likes to pontificate. What an irritating blight on the medical profession!!! Keep your head up high!! MIMISAN 404 Posted July 7, 2015 I would have said something like.....you mean like the other 10 times I have lost 60 pounds by myself and gained it back? At least this gives me a fighting chance and by the way...thanks for your support.
AfitRN2015 33 Posted July 8, 2015 I would get a new GI doc. I'm a nurse and have zero tolerance for ignorant docs.
VSGAnn2014 12,992 Posted July 8, 2015 There seems to be no end to the ignorance in this world, even among doctors. Like everyone here, I am gobsmacked that an M.D. does not know that weight stabilization after WLS is 10 times more likely (50%) than weight stabilization after diet/exercise alone (5%). Makes me want to wear a wrist guard so I don't hurt myself when I b***h-slap people for being so f**king ignorant.
chrisredjeep 357 Posted July 8, 2015 Yes he was totally ignorant to say that to you. I would certainly be going to another Doctor after that !
sweetlia 11 Posted July 8, 2015 Just use h use him and his comment as a reason to prove him wrong and not gain it back. Yes some people do put it back and some don't so try and be one of those who don't Then go see him again in two years Don't allow anyone to make you feel bad cause nobody is walking in your shoes !! Here, give him this article to read - I especially liek the part where Doctors are giving BAD advice. http://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587%2815%2900009-1/abstract And secondly... get a new GI doc. VSGAnn2014 12,992 Posted July 8, 2015 I'm still mad about this!
rvan09 4 Posted July 9, 2015 My GI is the one who actually recommended/ demanded I get the surgery, and basically decided which surgery I should get! (I have Crohn's.) I would try and see if you can find another doctor; this one doesn't seem to continue his education!
