How much time off work?

Recommended Posts

I realize that everyone is different but for those of you that work out of the house, how much time were you required to take off work after surgery?

How much did the Dr. want you to take and was it necessary?

I took 1 week completely off and worked from home the 2nd week. I almost wish I would have worked from home the 3rd weeks as well--only from the perspective of "eating". At week 3 I was still on liquids / soft foods and it was very hard to plan that.

You'll need two weeks just to adjust to food and Water. Your intake is SO little at the beginning. Week 2 you may feel like you could work, but its the food adjustment. And you could be tired from little calories.

BTW... If you have PTO, take it! Enjoy the summer off!!

I am 62 years young. I was back at work at 6 days. I own a shoe store and was on the fitting bench in 8 days. Lots of reaching, bending and twisting. Didn't hurt a thing. I did no lifting over 20 pounds. No problems getting in liquids or shakes. Everyone is different.

Depends on what type of work you do. I have a job where I do a lot of lifting and my doctor told me that I would be out for at least a month because of the lifting restriction. I know friends that have had the procedure and was only out for 2 weeks. Just ask your doctor.

I took 4 weeks..mainly because it was over the Christmas holidays. It allowed me time to heal and get use to my new life style.

I'm taking a whole week off but I figure since I work from home -customer service for a bank- I don't drive ,don't lift, 8 hr desk job with one hour lunch .. figure I can handle it . If see I can't then I can use my fmla for a day off here and there if needed and my shift is from noon til 9pm so no waking up super early and I can walk before shift or use the sationary bike .. think I can handle it

I took 5 weeks off. They recommended 6! Seems crazy now as I look back BUT the time off allowed me to focus on me and the new way of life. I had lots of time to plan, read, and research.

I took 9 days off (surgery 6/25, back to work July 6). I work in an office. It's been okay. I am tired by the end of the day though (work 8-5).

I work from home full time. I am a financial analyst who sits at a computer all day. I took a week off and spent most of the week sleeping. Then the second week I worked between 4 and 6 hours a day - I'd sleep in late and start work about 10 am and then I was done by 3 or 4 in the afternoon and would have to take a nap. It was not until week 5 that I was not totally exhausted.

I was planning to go back next week (I'll be 2 weeks out) but I'm so tired and have no stamina don't know how I can do that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
