Let's talk about teeth..and stuff

So I am 11 days post op. My regimen calls for 2 weeks clears post op then 6 weeks full liquids before transitioning to a soft diet. My issue (one of them anyway) is my teeth. They feel so gross. Like I need a good cleaning. I've scraped them some and it feels better but I feel the gunk building up again. I brush my teeth at least twice a day. Anyone else have this problem?

Do you floss or use a powered toothbrush? Plaque is going to build everyday regardless of what we are eating (or drinking) and when left on the teeth it hardens to forms tartar. Once tartar forms the only way to really get it all off is to go to the dentist. Try to start flossing daily in an up&down motion(not back and forth), you may have some bleeding if you don't regularly floss. Continue flossing daily and the bleeding should resolve. Or you can try investing in an Oral-B or Sonicare toothbrush( the basic models are fine). Hope this helps some.

I have it and have read many do too. I believe it's caused by fat burning in the body is often expelled through breathing. Lots of people get bad breath too. I'm excepting it as a good thing!

yes - I had it too! I blame the protien shakes more than anything else.

Good news... it goes away when you get to "real" food. Here is what I did.... mouthwash, brush, floss. But be careful with the tongue scraper - apparently I went too hard and too often and now I am paying for it. So be gentle with the tongue.

An electric toothbrush must help a lot, because I didn't notice anything like that.

Good luck. :)

I had that same issue. I was brushing my teeth several times a day. I agree it was the Protein Shakes and increased amounts of Protein. I did get regular cleaning from my dentist and that helped. It has gone away I'm 6 months post

I have to brush my teeth immediately after a shake because the taste and feel is yucky to me. I also get that metallic taste in my mouth from ketosis that I'm sure gives me stinky breath. It's turned me a bit OCD about teeth brushing a LOT????

Lol I still go through this but blame the chewable vitamins. Ughhhh I hate it. Im in the pureed stage and brush my teeth after I eat my Vitamins. .... but if I forget my toothbrush forget it. I feel like they haven't been brushed in days. Cant wait to be able to drink my vitamins

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
