How Do You Cope With the Waiting!

Recommended Posts

I completed all of my pre-op requirements and insurance approved in 24 hours! Cigna rocks! That was June 24. Today is July 6 and I have diligently followed my pre-op diet and have 2 pounds to go on my pre-op weight loss. The problem is I don't have a surgery date. The anxiety of not having a date is driving me crazy. Not to mention I have diligently followed the pre-op diet and am now only 12 pounds away from not qualifying. I am so scared full liquids for 2 weeks is going to take me too low (OMG, can't lose weight on my own and now am in danger of not getting help because I lost too much, this is a fat girl's hell!). Any advice? My surgeon's office is a 2 1/2 hr drive away otherwise I would be parked in their office until I got some answers. They aren't returning my calls, apparently scheduling is short staffed. And in case you were wondering, all of my messages have been upbeat and very friendly. ;)

Love reading all the posts on here, it makes this journey feel possible. Can't really vent my frustration to my family and friends, they aren't in a similar place and don't understand...so thanks for letting me air my ire here.

I totally understand your anxiety. The waiting was hard. I became obsessed with this site and bugged my scheduler too. Luckily she had wls years prior so she understood. I coped with the waiting by checking this site, doing research (and yes I had already done this, so I re-researched and re-re-researched etc.. lol). And I kept reminding myself that a year from now I would have the surgery and this wait time will be a distant memory. If I were to give 1 year ago me advice I would tell myself to watch marathons of 600lb life, biggest looser, and other weight loss shows. It helps me personally to get motivated.

I used to think that doctors broke the mold for having God complexes.

But now I know who really holds all the power - it's their schedulers!

I also have been keeping a video journal since day one. That helps me.

I started a journal early on to help me vent and document how I felt knowing I could look back later and see what I went through to get where I am. I researched recipes and made lists of things I wanted to try after I could eat again. I researched Snacks and things I could take to work for lunch so I could plan ahead and make better decisions. I got things together, bento boxes for lunch, a blender for making Protein shakes, etc. I got things in order and laundry done etc so I could rest and relax when I came home.

Good luck!!

Thanks so much for the advice! I got the magical call today -- July 21st is my date! Amazing how writing it on the calendar worked like a Valium, LOL. Now I can obsessively begin to clean, pack and prepare. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
