Drinking too fast - probably another dumb question...

Recommended Posts

So right out of surgery, I could only handle about 4 ounces per hour and each sip only about 1/2 to 1/3 ounce or it hurt. Within a week, I was able to drink closer to 8 ounces per Water. Now (4 weeks post-op), if I am really making an effort, I can drink a 16 ounce bottle in an hour. (Not all day...) My question is, as long as I am still sipping and it doesn't hurt going down (like it did in the beginning), is there an issue with drinking too fast? It won't hurt the pouch will it? As long as I am not "full" and overfilling it?

I am sure this is a dumb question but just checking....

I have the same question - been thinking about it lately as I can easily get 20 oz in less than an hour and I'm only 3 weeks out.

Water should pass right through your pouch. That is why they tell you not to drink fluids when you consume your meals. (Otherwise your food might also travel through your stomach right into your intestines without first being processed.)

Does this apply to anything liquid? ? Broth/soup?

Not a dumb question! I have been getting in 80+ ounces of liquid in per day lately (almost 3 months post op). I have had no pain from this at all and I am definitely NOT sipping like I was in the beginning. It feels good to get a good gulp of Water, especially when it's hot out. I was also worried that I might be doing damage to my tummy, but I don't feel like I can eat more than I should be (about 3/4 of a cup of food at a time) or like I am stretching my pouch, which it what I obsess over. I am inclined to think that if I was stretching my pouch I would feel it. Am I wrong?

@@Sreeves I've been able to drink quite fast as well. Because of that I specifically asked my surgeon if I could stretch my sleeve by drinking Water. He said no, then revised his statement to say as long as I don't keep drinking even after full and TRY to.

I think it's safe to say that you just need to listen to your tummy, when it says enough, stop.

my dietitian said it's not a problem (I asked because I was worrying about that, too). She said your pouch will let you know if you're drinking too fast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
