Lactose intolerance development

Recommended Posts

Hi there! I'm 10 days out and I'm having diarrhea since Wednesday (5 days). I'm following a diet that requires to drink milk or yogurt 6x a day. I'm wondering if I developed lactose intolerance. I'm seeing my nutritionist tomorrow morning but I was wondering if it's common to develop this disease after WLS. Did anyone develop it?

I didn't develop lactose intolerance as much as I developed an intolerance of sugars and fats, which includes milk fat. So, while I can drink skim milk, I can't drink any milk that has fat in it. I'm usually fine with yogurts, but I can't eat eggs. It's odd what your sleeve does or doesn't end up liking. It may just be that your stomach is trying to adjust to what you're eating and since most of what you're consuming is liquid, some diarrhea has resulted.

Hope you feel better!

I've seen reports of lactose intolerance - try cutting out the milk and only having yogurt to see if that helps, or add in Lactaid or similar to see if that helps. Good news is most Protein powders are lactose free so you won't have to give them up (getting your Protein in without powder can be challenging at first) and it may not be a permanent intolerance.

I was both dairy & meat intolerant for the first 6 months.. My new tummy wasnt having a bar of that until it was fully healed. Was a bit hard adjusting but i did it. Its not the end of the world even though it may seem like it is right now. There are plenty of alternatives out there. I took Syntrax Nectar (fuzzy navel) Protein Shake daily plus Quest Protein bars.. Cookies and cream - and apple pie are my favourite :). I also ate nuts and fish to get min 60g of protein in.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
