wagyu 50 Posted July 5, 2015 (edited) Hi all I know this is dumb but I'm terrified of the IV needle... More so than the actual surgery. I'm more terrified about them putting the IV needle in especially if they put it on the back of your hand area versus the inner elbow(?) can you let me know if this doesn't hurt and or the least of my worries? I get squirmish just thinking about it Edited July 5, 2015 by wagyu
zonetracy 53 Posted July 5, 2015 (edited) They put the needle in the back of my hand, which I preferred because I felt I wouldn't have to worry about bending my elbow and cutting off the IV flow. The worst part is the initial poke but once that's over the sharp part retracts and a small flexible needle thing is left in your vein which you can hardly feel. Easy Peasy Edited July 5, 2015 by zonetracy
RaginCajun 177 Posted July 5, 2015 Just close your eyes and look away and you won't feel anything but a little prick and then all is well -RC-
wagyu 50 Posted July 5, 2015 Hahah thanks all. Is it the Same as if they are drawing blood kind of prick? Like I won't feel it again after? I just hate that's urial going through my vein feeling. But It seems like it's a prick and all done. I'm going to breathe hard look away and that's it. Eeek!!
mtraverse 327 Posted July 5, 2015 Sick nurse here! They are much more fun to put in than get! Once it's in though there is not much to it!
her1981 448 Posted July 5, 2015 My hospital numbs you before putting the iv in. Ask if they can do that for you.
joatsaint 2,814 Posted July 5, 2015 I remember them putting the needle in the back of my hand. Felt like a little mosquito bite. Then I was O-U-T! woke up and was on my way back to my room. Nothing to it. And I have a BIG fear of needles.
NaomiAus 104 Posted July 5, 2015 I am very difficult to put an IV in, last time I had surgery, they knocked me out with gas after trying twice and then put in, not sure if this is an option for this surgery as am pre op, but you can only ask.
wagyu 50 Posted July 5, 2015 Hahahs thanks everyone. I will try to see if they can numb it or knock me out before putting it in... If not I'll suck it up... Gulp.
honeybunz 139 Posted July 5, 2015 Won't lie, not pleasant for me. It's always the worst part of surgery for me. Once it's in I am so relieved that I don't even care about the surgery part. Good luck!
wagyu 50 Posted July 5, 2015 (edited) Honeybunz, EXACTLY im not scared about them cutting me but I am extremely scared of the IV cause I had surgery before on something else and the one thing I remember from it was not my ( anesthesia vomiting, or pain in my anywhere...) it was the sharp pain and sound of the dang IV. Going into my veins. So I kind of want to see my options here hahahaha Edited July 5, 2015 by wagyu
no onions 258 Posted July 5, 2015 I do not remember it hurting while it was in. I do remember some tenderness and bruising once it was removed.

Have you lt them know? I am sure they will be able to help and take away that worry !! Hugs Kate

MissRobin 93 Posted July 7, 2015 An IV shouldn't hurt. When there is pain it is caused by 1 of 2 things. 1-The needle inside is resting/poking on the vein wall. This will cause a hematoma if the needle isnt moved to a more comfortable position. 2-The alcohol based cleaning solution, chlorhexidine that they put on the area BEFORE they put the needle in. As the needle goes into the skin it brings the alcohol inside the vein with it and causes a burning sensation. I personally get a bad reaction to the chlorodexidine. I donate blood on a regular basis and I always request iodine instead as there is no reaction for me.
