Help! I'm having problems after surgery!

Recommended Posts

I had the lapband installed on Oct. 26 on the West Coast of Florida. My operation took place on a Tuesday afternoon and I was released on Wed. morning even though I was suffering from nausea and was unable to hold fluids down. I spent Wed. and Thursday trying to open up the swelling between the 2 stomachs. Thursday night I was taken to the ER for fluids. I continued vomitting on Friday and was admitted Friday night to the hospital. I am still in the hospital and four days later and am continuing to vomit. This is now 8 days since surgery. I have been told by my surgeon that this is common in men and that time will bring the swelling down and the hole will open. I was fitted with a size 10 lapband and on the same day another lady was fitted with a size 10 lapband and she is considerably smaller than I. Could this make a difference. Need help! Any ideas from anyone! Scott.

Scott, so sorry you're having problems. Have they gotten the nausea under control? Are you on an i.v. for fluids, so you don't get dehydrated? Have they done a barium swallow? Are you able to keep any fluids down yet? Please take care of yourself and sending you (((hugs))) for a quick recovery.

Hi - I'm scott's wife - replying for him. He is on IV fluids so he is safe. They have not done the barium swallow - do you think that they should? It is so discouraging for him and for his family. Thanks for your hugs! I'll send them along.

oh my goodness! Please tell Scott we are sending many many prayers his way for a speedy recovery. I know my dr. did everything they could to keep me from vomitting after surgery...you guys might want to get a second opinion...you dont need anything bad to happen to your sweet husband. Please please let us know what happens and know we are thinking of you!

I'm certainly not a dr! Just wondering if a barium swallow would let the dr. see what's going on inside - and if the swelling is going down. Please be sure that he follows the dr's post-op diet, staying on liquids long enough to let this heal properly inside. Best of luck to all of you!

Scott has he checked your band for slippage? There was a woman in the hospital when I had my surgery. She had hers the week before me but was still there when I went in formine a week later due to the same thing you are explaining and she found out after days of vomiting that the band had slipped right after surgery. I do not want to alarm or scare you but has your Dr. checked for that yet? Usually when you cant keep even liquids down it could mean slippage. Ask him about that if you all ready haven't a barium swallow may detect that or an endoscopy. Hang in there. Keeping you in my thoughts & prayers

I knew somebody would show up with with a suggestion. Now that I read Michelle's post, I'm sure I've read the same thing about slippage.

I was not released from the hospital until I had a barium swallow. Infact they watched it for 10 minutes as it would not go into my small intestin. They did this a few hours after surgery to make sure everything was ok.

I would insist on this ASAP so they can see what is going on.

Good luck!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
