I weighed 6 lbs more when I was discharged from the hospital after gastric bypass surgery. I know it is primarily from the IV fluids and swelling. Now I am 5 days post op and I have only lost 5 of the 6 lbs. Should I have lost more by now?

You are right, it is from all the fluids, swelling etc.

trust me, you will lose it and then some very quickly. The best thing to do honestly is try not to let that scale rule you.

The scale is not the only way to measure progress. Remember it is only one barometer. Pay attention to how you feel, how your clothes are fitting and measure with a tape measure.

Don't worry, the weight will come off and everyone loses it at a different rate but in the end over time everyone catches up with one another.

Good luck!

Thank you djmohr, that is very helpful. I keep telling myself that I'm not going to keep hopping on the scale and then I still do it. I do feel great and have a lot more energy already.

I didn't weigh in until my first post op appointment. That really helped me.

Nope everyone is different. I had gained 5lbs and lost 6 - 10 a week later. I was one of the slow losers which I truly enjoyed but at times it did get frustrating. Keep it going 5 lbs off is better than an extra pound gained. Good luck

I had lost 10 pounds in the Pre Op diet, then gained 11 in the hospital. Talk about depressing....But it all fell off within 2-3 days of being home. No worries, it will pass

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
