valcatlett4 33 Posted July 3, 2015 Did anyone quit smoking for surgery? I have made it 30 days and have probably gained 15 pounds since I quit ????
wannaBthinsoon 1,634 Posted July 3, 2015 Yep! You have to or you don't get the surgery! I quit a year before my surgery. I wanted to be sure I was healthy, and my lungs were able to handle the anesthesia. It was totally worth it. I don't miss them. Sure, I gained, but I also had the surgery, so I've lost, and I'm still losing. But I'm not coughing, and I don't stink of cigarette smoke anymore.

AllisonK1986 68 Posted July 3, 2015 My surgeon is gonna test me at the end of each month and if I test positive for nicotine he will delay my surgery another 3 months.

TealSister 296 Posted July 14, 2015 I stopped cold turkey on 1/15/15 and surgery was 3/26/15. You will be SO HAPPY when you finally quit. Combined with surgery, you can breathe again, walk much further, smell better, live longer, etc -- you know the benefits. Surgery is so much better than smoking Good luck!!! vicki andrews 6 Posted July 15, 2015 Hi, I am new to this and I also had to quit smoking. I have quit for 6 weeks now and I am holding my weight but in order for them to schedule the surgery the Doctor requires me to lose 5% which because I am on the lower end with a BMI of 35.7 is only about 10 lbs. My god I am having a terrible time with it I just can't seem to stick with a diet to get off that weight. The doctor keeps saying I understand you have plenty of time, but at this rate I will never get the surgery. Really I am so happy that I quit and the last time I did was about 10 yrs ago and I put on 25lbs so if I look at it that way I have not put on any weight. I just think I should have taken off the weight then quit smoking.
tlsting 1 Posted July 15, 2015 I had to quit smoking and it sucks. I too gained a lot of weight. I gained 20 lbs in 6 weeks. I didn't even think I was eating more. Now I'm am doing the preop diet and haven't lost the 20lb I gained but hope to by my surgery date.
