Getting fluids in after surgery

Recommended Posts

I had gastric sleeve surgery on June 30. I am on a clear liquid diet this week before moving to a full liquid diet next week. I am supposed to intake 64 oz of liquid per day but am struggling with this. Can anyone share any tips such as how many oz of liquid they get in an hour, etc? Right now, I'm measuring 4 oz and sipping on it for an hour. Thanks!

Ok so here's my post-surgical plan: I am going to get some of those medicine cups (like the ones that come with cough syrup) they are exactly 1 oz each. If you are drinking Water (or other fluids) for 8 hours a day. Then one should aim for 8 1oz shooters per hour or 1 shot every 7.5 mins. I am going to try to find an app to ding me every 7.5 minutes. Of course, all these things are easier said than done. If you tried to increase your intake to at least 6 oz per hour (ie a shot every 10 minutes) and you can handle that then maybe try to upgrade to 8 per hour and take it from there.

I hope this helps and I certainly hope that it works for me (and you). Good luck!!!

First of all congratulations!! :) I hope you are feeling well and feel positive over the next few days that you WILL eventually get enough fluids in. From reading the forums, it's apparent that a lot of people struggle with getting the recommended 64 oz in, especially so soon after surgery but as @@Inner Surfer Girl states...sip, sip, sip then sip some more.

Good Luck and gentle hugs

Kate

I struggled with this as well. I am three weeks post op and probably just beginning to get the right amount of liquid! I think I spent a lot of time under estimating how many ounces fit in my sleeve. It gets easier though!

Thanks everyone. The hospital sent me home with a supply of the 1 oz medicine cups so I've been using them. I just need to make myself sip and sip some more (in between naps). I still have a lot of gas in my system which seems like it makes it hard to get the liquids in. I've been walking around the house every 30 minuites and using the Gas X strips. They are great and I highly recommend them. Baby steps I suppose.......

I heard that arm circles are also good for gas especially if its in your shoulders. Good luck.

I am three weeks post-op and I found myself getting dehydrated. My NUT told me I needed to get 1/2 my body weight in ounces..... She does realize she is talking to a super morbidly obese person??? Right?? That's a lot of ounces. However, I am up to between 80 and 100 ounces per day. It's hard but I am getting it by drinking one 16 oz bottle of Water when I first wake up. It takes me about an hour. After that I sip sip sip. I keep my bottles lined up on my window seal so I can keep up. It's tough and something we all struggle with.

For me, the first couple of days at home trying to get enough liquids in was the hardest part of the entire ordeal. I was fortunate that the swelling went down in my stomach very rapidly and by the end of the week I could drink as much as I wanted to without the little cups. It does get better!

Had surgery on june 30th also. My surgeon told me that most won't get 64 in but to just sip every 10 minutes while awake and you will do well. So far so great!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
