Hey banders! I'm curious if anyone has tried to eat raw oysters with the lap band. I'm usually pretty good about being able to eat most foods by dinner time (I wouldn't think of trying this during the daytime when I'm much tighter)...but I can image a whole raw oyster just sitting on top of the band with no where to go. Or maybe it just slides right through??

Has anyone with an adjusted band tried this? I'm sure it depends on band tightness, but I wanted to poll the group to see if anyone had an words of encouragement or warning!

Thanks!

I had some day before yesterday. I'm 6 years post op and I have my band adjusted for me. A few things cause me difficulty, but oysters are not a problem for me.

I should add. ...I do not swallow them whole. I usually have them on a cracker. Mmmmm Mmmm!

I LOVE oysters, as well as clams....but not with the band....

Did it once, and it was like there was a string tied around it and as soon as it hit the band, someone pulled it right up and out!! It was that quick...!

But I quess it depends upon how much restricted your band is...you'll have to try it for yourself.

I can still eat steamers with melted butter....(but not many)

Thanks for the tips! I decided to try it. I snuck an oyster into the bathroom (the small joys of lap band, lol), and I chewed it (which I thought would be weird, but was not) and I swallowed without issue! I took a few drinks of Water just to make sure it went down and all was good. Phew!

No problems whatsoever with oysters. But I have very little restriction. It's usually dry Protein, like chicken breast, that I (had) the most problems with.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
