Discussions with PCP about WLS

The sleeve is a tool along with exercise and a change of eating habits. So basically a forever diet with a smaller stomach. It is definitely a life long commitment and not a short term diet. Can you lose weight? Absolutely! Can you gain it all back? Absolutely! Yes you may become nauseous if you eat too much. Just don't eat more than you are allowed. You will have to take Vitamins the rest of your life...you have to be okay with that. You have to commit to drinking 64 ounces Water a day minimum.

It is a tool along with a commitment from you to make a change in your life. You can always go for a consult and learn for yourself. Do your research and learn what the process is.

There are tons of success stories and yes there are tons of people who fell off the plan. You can choose to be a success story, the choice is yours to make. Good luck no matter what you do!

It is certainly a commitment, a long term one, similar to diet and exercise without the surgery. I think one of the most important things going in is to understand its not going to fix everything without playing your part. I just had mine so I don't know the struggle once someone has reached goal and start to gain weight again. But I think its important to use the gift I've been given to change my eating and exercise habits so I can maintain success when I get there. I understand my sleeve cannot do all of the work for me. But I think with the right mindset - you can absolutely do it and be successful with maintenance.

Like Peach mentioned, go to the info sessions and maybe some of the support groups. This way you can learn more about people's successes and struggles and help decide if it is right for you.

This forum is also a great resource for learning more.

Mine reacted the same way when I talked to her about it. You have to do your research for sure. Thing is...I feel like my surgeon has a better understanding about the disease of obesity than my PCP does. Some people need that extra help of the sleeve but I do understand that it isn't a fix all.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Or in this case, lost. People love to focus on failure, I heard those stories too. But my doctor set realistic expectations, even asking if I would be satisfied losing 50% of my excess weight because those are the statistics. Of course I want/wanted to lose more but realized that even losing 1/2 my excess weight is better than continuing to gain.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
