Has anybody had a high A1c before surgery? My doctor just called to inform me and has changed me to two insulins. She said this will help with getting my A1c lowered so I can get surgery

My husband's was over 12 when he had surgery. He hasn't had to take any insulin or other diabetes meds since he left the hospital. The last blood work he had was at 3 months and it was down to like 6.2, which is still high, but it takes a while for your level to drop after your glucose level does. I imagine it will be totally normal when he has his one year checkup.

My surgeon said be wanted my A1C of 7 before surgery. My last check was 8.2. I'm so very close. I have appointment next week with the diabetes clinic. Hopefully I'll be down below 8.

By the way I had my A1C checked. After a month on Victoza, my A1C droped from the 8.2 down to 6.6. If you are having troubles dropping it, that might be something to look into. It also helped me drop 15 pounds like it was nothing!

I agree... Victoza or trulicity... Will assist with lowering your A1C and weight loss

I hadn't had blood work done in many years until this last March when I was seeking approval from my PCP to pursue WLS. When he told me my A1C was 6.8 and that means I have type 2 diabetes I was not entirely shocked. But he was willing not to start me on any meds since he knew I was going down this road that should cure it in matter of months post op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
