frizzylizzie 10 Posted June 30, 2015 Hi all - i was sleeved on Nov. 22nd, 2014. Down nearly 100 lbs and very happy. However I recently came down with a throat infection that is taking me a very long time to recover from. Plus neither my daughter, husband or sitter got sick, nor any coworkers. I just had my 6 mo checkup and the blood work showed a Vitamin D deficiency but it was still an improvement after the 3 month check. Wondering if anyone else has had immune system problems post surgery? Any tips for improving it?
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted June 30, 2015 Quite the opposite. My immune system appears stronger. I have severe allergies and chronic uterica. I was often getting breakthrough hive despite taking Zyrtec daily. My allergies are under control for the first time in years. I had a vitaD deficiency at my 6 mth bloodwork. They put me on a 12 week course of prescription strength D and repeated my bloodwork. It is now within normal range.
frizzylizzie 10 Posted July 1, 2015 It's just so odd. Could a Vitamin d deficiency affect one's immunity that badly? Surgeon didnt think I needed vitamin shots.
Inner Surfer Girl 12,015 Posted July 1, 2015 I don't know, but I know that D is super important for WLS patients. My team had everyone start taking extra D the minute they began contemplating surgery. I do know that a D deficiency is becoming more and more common in the general population due to sunscreen use and just generally not getting enough sunlight. bigfatgoodbye 82 Posted July 1, 2015 Just FYI a little known fact. 98% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are low in Vitamin d3. Before WLS I was taking 5000 mg.
snowkitten 371 Posted July 2, 2015 No a Vitamin d deficiency doesn't affect the immune system. What was your WBC? Lymphocytes? If those were low tell your doctor your concern and ask for more in depth tests (IGG, IGA, IGM, CD4, CD8 ETC..). BUT you should be aware the treatments for immune system issues is not fun. Try taking Vitamin C. My doctor says it's the only vitamin proven to help the immune system. (Fyi, I have CVID, an immune deficiency so I do know what I'm talking about... but it's genetic, and has only improved since surgery)
