I am 1 month post gastric sleeve and have progressed to a "soft" diet, however, after eating soft foods even in small amounts I feel discomfort in my chest (epigastric area) and can feel the food as it moves down my esophagus and stomach. (My soft diet includes: mashed potatoes, oatmeal, grits, soft scrambled eggs, baked low density fish, potted meat, over cooked carrots/beans) I am taking Nexium Suspension daily plus I still take Gas-X strips a couple of times through-out the day. At first I felt like maybe I was advancing my diet too quickly, or eating too fast, not chewing well enough, so I now pay more attention to those details but that has not seemed to make a difference. I don't like the way I feel after I eat, I even don't like the sensation I feel after drinking sometimes. So, I subconsciously find myself avoiding both as much as possible. I have to push myself to consume every calorie and ounce of liquid. I don't feel ill or unhealthy in anyway, other than low energy at times. Thanks for your support.

I am two weeks post op and I'm anxious to see any responses. I had Jello one day and it was hard going down and then I felt bad for a few days after. I also have to force myself to consume what is necessary to get through the healing stage.

I am on day 12 and having the same problems. Even the Jello, which didn't bother me last week, is causing discomfort now. This just started a couple of days go. I seem to be burping quit a bit and wake up in the morning with acid in my throat. Don't want to drink anything because of the discomfort. I have zero energy but no pain in my incision areas. Glad I have an appointment with my surgeon on Thursday.

Are you on a proton pump inhibitor?

2 Things may help:

  • Even though you are currently eating a what seems like a snails pace, eat even slower.
  • Get a PPi like prolisec or the generic omeprazole. If you are waking up with a burning sensation, ask your doctor to write you a prescription for omeprazole. I was most comfortable at 40 mgs prescription strength.

I am curently taking a PPI, Nexium 40mg, I have talked with people who have said that they have had to change there PPI because some worked better for them than others. So maybe thats the case with me, I will call my PCP and see if he can send in an RX for something else. I know that I'm extremely early out, but I feel like I will never enjoy food again.

I had this feeling the first few weeks whenever I tried to drink anything without a straw. Drinking with a straw limited the feeling, but foods for a few weeks also made that weird feeling. It felt a lot like swallowing rocks...I could feel it chunking its way all the way down through my chest. It went away in a few weeks although if I drink Water too quickly now, like after a workout, I can still feel a little bit of that feeling in my chest area. Eat slowly, drink slowly or with a straw, and it will probably go away in a few weeks- at least it did for me. :)

I'm over 2 years post Sleeve surgery and I STILL experience what you're talking about. I may be wrong but I just believe that sometimes our bodies act out when there is no other way for it to tell you "I don't like change." You and I may just be sensitive in that area for a long time or maybe it will eventually go away. Either way, I'd talk with your surgeon about it to make sure nothing is wrong and if nothing is, FEEL BLESSED that this is your biggest complaint! Hopefully it will clear up for you, I just wanted to let you know that I still have that problem two and a half years later.

I get the same feeling in my esophagus like terrible pressure and burning when I eat, like the food comes back in my throat and I feel the pressure of it!? I think it's a symptom of reflux and irritation of the esophagus from acid. When I take prevacid I notice it is WAY better. I also eat WAY to fast I gotta work on this! eggs are the worst for me I feel them in my throat for hours seems like!

I had that feeling post op all the way into about 2 1/2 months post op.. I would literally time myself eating with a watch, eat slowly and no fluids while I was eating. It got better and went away after about 2 1/2 months. I do experience it if I eat over 4 oz and get closer to 5 so I do try to weigh my food each time. I take Prevacid it works best for me. I did not have reflux too bad prior to the surgery and only took prevacid about 1-2 times a week. I tried last week to go with out the prevacid and woke up to food coming up in my throat and could not sleep. I have not skipped the prevacid since that episode.

I get that if I eat too much or too fast. It I'd hoe I know to slow down and stop. Also need to take smaller sips.

Hi,

I'm a "newbie" trying to get all the information I can before I take the "plunge". Are you still feeling the same or have your symptoms gotten better?

Also, I keep hearing of people taking medication such as Prilosec. Is this something you will need to rely on the rest of your life?

Any information you can give me is greatly appreciated, as I'm a nervous wreck even thinking about doing this! LOL......

I am one month post op sleeved /6/25/15, and just had my first soft food which was a scrambled egg. I ate half. I'm so nervous to eat don't want to get sick. I previously had a lap band and don't want the whole vomiting thing to occur again. Excited to move on from full liquids but nervous at the same time.

Ahh yes I have the same thing! Nexium takes the edge off better than the prilocect I was originally given however it doesn't take it totally my a way. I have yet to find something to help totally. Even eating slow and small amounts tracking what types of food I eat yada yada isn't helping. I'm hoping it gets to a point where it tapers off or stops

I'm feeling much better, still taking the Nexium suspension 40 mg everyday. But my life saver has been Carafate, it cuts the acid indigestion immediately. Plus I've learned to eat more slowly and pause between bites to determine if i really need the next bite. It's amazing how one bite too many can make such a huge difference in comfort. Oh well 35+ pounds down in 2 months. Loving the weight loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
