WLS in the 80's and weight gain after.

I had "stomach stapling" in the early '80's and after getting to my goal of losing 100 lbs. I gained all of it back over the past 15 years. I'm thinking of a bypass but wonder if anyone has the same story as I and what the result was. Thanks

I had a friend who underwent surgery back in the 80's. He lost significant weight as a result and maintained this weight loss over the years. Recently he dropped around 30 pounds and is more concerned about this additional weight loss and the cause. The process back then was radically different. They removed much of his intestines but he was able to eat as much as he wanted. He remembers them calling the operation a "Y". But it is very much different than the RNY performed today.

The type of weight loss surgery available in the 80's was very different than what exist today. Since you gained the weight back after surgery, the same drivers might be around if you have gastric bypass and you might regain the weight back.

I asked my nutritionist, why some people gain the weight back after they lose it from weight loss surgery? She said it was due to grazing (snacking). I tend to think that it is a little more complex and relates to what people graze on. I limit my grazing to Protein and fats. I avoid processed sugars almost completely and minimize my carbohydrates. I have been in a maintenance phase for about a year and a half, and my weight is flatlined.

I agree that with you that weight loss is complex. I'm seeing a nutritionist right now to aid in my weight loss goal. The surgery I had only happened in my stomach there was no bypass of the small intestine. I read that the fail rate for this surgery was 65-70%. Congratulations on your tremendous weight loss.

I am so sorry to hear you went through this once and gained your weight back. It is my worst fear.

I cannot answer your question because I just had my bypass in Sept. I am down 111lbs with 34 to go to get to goal.

If I were in your shoes I would definitely meet with a bariatric center of excellence team to discuss options. They are extremely supportive and have the right team of specialists to answer your questions and support you during the next phase of your journey.

I would call your insurance company and ask for the bariatric centers of excellence that they support. That would be my very first step.

Thanks for the reply and support. Congratulations on your weight loss. Keep up the hard work. I have an appt at a excellence bariatric center at the end of July. All I know is I need help(which is hard to admit) to take this weight off. I don't know that I want to go through surgery again but any help will be good.

It's great to hear that you are meeting with a nutritionist and have an appointment with a bariatric team. The research and advances in nutrition theory that have been done over the last 20-30 years may be helpful for you.

Focusing on high-Protein, low carb, getting enough Water and exercising may be enough to help you be healthier with your existing tool, but it may need surgical enhancement. I hope the bariatric team can help come up with a good plan.

Just to ease your mind a bit, I think the surgeries of today are SO MUCH safer and easier than the stomach staplings back in the day. I used to babysit for a lady that had it done in the 80's, and she almost died from a staple coming loose. It seemed so dangerous at the time. I also think those stomach staplings of old are why there is still a stigma of how dangerous and "drastic" WLS is. My sleeve surgery was easier than my gall bladder surgery.

I know we are suppose to eat Protein first I am on 3 day of liquids but the fitness pal says I need more calories, been around 600 should I eat more broth or puddings?

I am just a newbie in the pre op stage, but from what I have read you should be fine at the 600 calorie range at first. Fitness Pal isn't set up to advise you on healthy calories for post wls

Ignore My Fitness Pal right now. You're in such an abnormal situation that MFP "rules" don't apply at all.

Focus only on your Protein and Water for now.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
